Botnsdalur og berjamór | Hikes in August

Síðsumar: Ég gekk að Glym í Botnsdal í góðum félagsskap í vikunni sem leið. Við gengum upp aflíðandi hryggina í NV-hlíðum dalsins, milli Hraunhellisgils og Svörtugjár og komum þar að fossinum ofarlega. Óðum ánna fyrir ofan fossinn eins og fara gerir og svo niður gönguleiðina SA-megin gljúfursins. Sú leið er brött og hrikaleg en stígar víða hlaðnir tröppum og með haldreipum. Og þar sést fossinn í öllu sínu veldi. Fossinn er um 200 metra hár og sannarlega ferðar virði.

Glymur waterfall: I hiked to Glymur waterfall (ca 650 ft) in Botnsdalur in good company last week. We took the trail up the ridge on the NW slopes of the valley, between Hraunhellisgil and Svartagjá, and came to the waterfall at the top. We crossed the river above the waterfall (wading the icecold, rapid flowing river) and then descended along the main trail on the SE side of the canyon. That trail is steep and rugged, but the path has also been paved with stone steps and ropes for guide and support. On the east side you can see the waterfall in all its glory. A hike definitely worth the trip.

Old farm ruins: As in many remote places in Iceland you find in Botnsdalur abandoned farms, where life was hard and in the end did not fit the demands of modern life.

Berjamór! Þó sól og þurrkur hafi ekki verið áberandi á SV-landinu er allur gróður er þroskamikill eftir hlýtt sumar. Berin eru að verða fullþroskuð, krækiberin stór og falleg og bláber á góðri leið í Skorradalnum.

Berry picking! After two summers without any wild berries on my plate I was happy to spend few hours picking bilberries and crowberries. Ah, the wonderful taste of late summer in Skorradalur!
