Dagur barna og bóka: Gleðilegan dag barnabókarinnar! Dagurinn, 2. apríl, er fæðingardagur H.C. Andersen, meistara táknsagna og ævintýra. 

„Allt þarf að vera svo nýstárlegt og öðruvísi í dag.“
Svona kvartar haninn sem stekkur út úr gamla stafrófskverinu í einu ævintýri H.C. Andersen: ABC-Bogen. Og haninn bætir við:
„Nú eru börn víst svo gáfuð að þau geta lesið áður en þau hafa lært stafrófið.”
Og heldur því auðvitað fram að gamla stafrófskverið standi vel fyrir sínu.
„En þau ættu að fá eitthvað nýtt,“
mótmælti sögupersónan sem hafði skrifað nýtt stafrófskver í stað þess gamla. 

Haninn sem gól óttaðist að gamla kverinu yrði skipt út fyrir nýrri bók – og fullyrðir að nýja bókin verði ekki langlíf, því hún hafi „engan hana“. Í sögunni kemur ekki fram hvernig fer, en það stefnir greinilega í að nýja bókin fari í prentun. 

Börn eru svo einmitt gáfuð að þau geta lesið áður en þau hafa lært starfrófið. Þau lesa myndir sem segja sögur og í bestu bókum er skrifað milli lína, bæði í mynd og texta. Og nýjar kynslóðir þurfa eitthvað nýtt. Stundum eitthvað gamalt og gott, eins og tímalaus ævintýri. Njótið barnabókanna!

Children’s book old and new: Happy Children’s Book Day! Today is the birthday of H.C. Andersen, the master of allegories and fairy tales.

“Everything has to be new and different nowadays.” *
This is how the rooster in the old alphabet book complained – in one of the HCA fairy tales: The ABC-Book. And the rooster added:
“Everything has to be advanced. Children are so wise that they can read before they have even learned the alphabet.” *
In the roosters opinion the old ABC-book is what the children need. But a man who had written new verses for a new ABC protested:
‘They should have something new!’ *

The rooster feared that the old book would be replaced by a new book – and claims that the new book will not last long, because “it has no rooster”. The story does not say how things go, but indicates that the new book will be printed.

And yes, indeed: children are so smart that they can read before they have learned the alphabet! They read pictures. Pictures tell stories and in the best books you can also read between the lines, both in the picture and the text. And surely, new generations need something new. Perhaps sometimes something old and classic, the timeless tales.
