Snæfellsjökull | At the gate to the centre of the earth!

Snaefellsjokull30032013-2“Descend, bold traveller, into the crater of the jokul of Sneffels,
which the shadow of Scartaris touches before the kalends of July,
and you will attain the centre of the earth; which I have done …”
– Jules Verne: Journey into the Interior of the Earth

♦ Photo Friday – delayed! I have admired Snæfellsjökull from a distance across the Faxaflói Bay since childhood. Not because of Jules Verne’s fiction or the glaciers alleged magical powers, but simply because of its beauty and picturesque grandeur. Yesterday I got the chance to enjoy the spectacular view from the top of the glacier – and to take a ride down the highest peak of the icy summit!

Hopefully I can get up there again before too long. Snæfellsjökull is shrinking and melting fast as the global temperature gets higher. Every summer I look across the bay and see more of the lava mountain and less of the white glacier. Still an active volcano, Snæfellsjökull has its powers and is, in that sense, an entry to the boiling centre of the earth …
