Af stað inn í nýja árið! | A walk into the new year

Áramót: Ég hef notið þess að eiga nokkra góða daga í sveitinni í kringum áramótin. Eftir veisluhöld og mannfagnaði er fátt betra en að rölta út í bláinn og horfa á fjöllin og skýin, sjólagið og stöku fugla í vetrarlandslaginu. Nú hækkar sól á lofti!
⬆︎ 2023: Snæfellsjökull sveif í hillingum og hrafninn hafði sitt að segja á síðasta degi ársins.
⬇︎2024: En nýja árið lofaði góðu: Ölver var klæddur í bleikar slæður og teiknin í fjörunni voru margvísleg.

The turn of the year: I have been enjoying a few days at the farm around the new year. One of the best ways to recover after the Christmas feasts is to stroll out in to the cold blue and watch the sky and the mountains, as well as the sea and the few birds that stay for winter. And the sun is returning back, minute by minute!
⬆︎ 2023: Snæfell Glacier (Snæfellsjökull) flew above the sea in superior mirage, but the raven had the last word on the last day of the year.
⬇︎2024: The new year is promising: Mt. Ölver (the Pyramid of Iceland) was dressed in pink veils and the signs I found at the beach were delightfully mysterious.

Sumarsólstöður | Sterna paradisaea – Bird of the sun

Föstudagsmyndin: Enn kemur hún hingað, krían, þessi magnaði fugl sem flýgur póla á milli og freistar gæfunnar í svölu norðrinu á hverju sumri. Sannur sólarfugl sem ár hvert nýtur birtu tveggja sumra. Myndirnar eru teknar um miðnætti 21. – 22. júní við Melaleiti, en þar leggja kríurnar flugleið sína með ströndum á kvöldin, milli varpsvæða og fæðusvæða. Krían er einstakur flugfugl, hvernig sem á það er litið. Raunar er tilvera kríunnar hreint undur, ekki síst þegar litið er til sífellt brothættari vistkerfa jarðar. Líf hennar er vissulega „eilíft kraftaverk“.

Photo Friday: The arctic tern, Sterna paradisaea, was busy as always at summer solstice. I caught the terns flying pass our farm at midnight, while the sun was setting behind Snæfellsnes mountain range. There are some small colonies of arctic terns in our area and the nearby Grunnafjörður mudflat/estuary is an important feeding ground for many birds. The amazing kría, a magnificent flyer and a follower of light, is worth celebrating, no less than summer solstice. Her return to the cold north, migrating from the Antarctica, as earth’s vulnerable ecosystems tremble, is a true miracle.

Tungl, sól og fjögurra blaða smári | Sun, moon and four leaf clovers

Föstudagsmyndir: Af gömlum vana leita ég stundum að fjögurra blaða smára ef ég á leið fram hjá smárabeði. Og heppnin var með mér í gærkvöldi: ég fann nokkra marglaufa smára, bæði fjögurra og fimm blaða smára. Í góðviðrinu þessar vikurnar nýtur í senn sólar og mána á kvöldin, en gróður og jarðvegur er þurr og hita- og rykmistur breytir litum í fjarlægðinni. Nú er að óska sér varlega.

Photo Friday: I can’t pass a field of clovers without trying my luck to find a four leaf clover. Usually there are none – but once in a while there are several. And last night I also found five-leaf clovers! Now I better wish carefully.

The photos below are also from last night: clear skies and bright nights give a view to both sun and moon at the same time. In our parts it hasn’t rained for weeks so the soil is unusually dry, plants are making seed and blooming earlier and the haze of dust and heat changes the colors of the evening sky.

Snjór | Snow

♦ Föstudagsmyndir: Snjókoman og fannfergið á suðvesturhorni landsins í lok febrúar sló met. Þegar við bættist blíðviðri dag eftir dag breyttust þessar annars oft umhleypingasömu vikur vetrarins í hreint undur. Ég fór með myndavélina í sveitina og horfði á snjó og ís í ýmsum myndum.

♦ Photo Friday: So we had snow! In Reykjavík and the southwest of Iceland it was record snowfall on the night of February 26th followed by beautiful sunny days. And the weather stayed great for weeks! The snow was soft and powdery for a long time. I went to the family farm and enjoyed the landscape of snow and ice.

♦ Föstudagsmyndir: Ég er að reyna að létta á mínum þarfasta þjóni sem ég hleð linnilaust ljósmyndum. Hendi ekki þessum. Sólarlag við Snæfellsjökul er ómótstæðilegt.

Vetrarmyndir | Cold and blue

♦ Föstudagsmyndir: Góðir dagar í sveitinni! Snæfellsjökull sýndi enga hógværð í byrjun ársins og hillti uppi yfir köldum sjónum. Þessa fyrstu daga ársins hefur hlánað og snjóað á víxl. Óneitanlega nýtist takmarkað sólarljósið betur ef það endurkastast af hvítri jörð. Og linsan mín er mun samvinnuþýðari þá daga.
♦ Photo Friday: It looked as if Snæfellsjökull / Snæfell Glacier on Snæfellsnes peninsula had changed size and shape as the weather changed one of the first days in January. Above the cold sea the temperature was slightly higher, making the mountains fly – a phenomenon called superior mirage. And fly does our young stallion in training and fly did the wool-blanket on the clothesline. We have enjoyed fine winter days at the farm.

Sumar í sveitinni | Summer at the farm

♦ Fjaran og fjöllin: Þrátt fyrir annir má ekki gleyma því að slæpast úti í náttúrunni. Rápa, horfa, hlusta. Hér bar fyrir augu Blálilju (Mertensia maritima) í fjörunni í Melaleiti. Og Snæfellsjökull er ævinlega jafn heillandi, sama hvernig á hann er litið. Ég tel víst að skarfurinn sem sat úti í Kotatanga sé sama sinnis.
♦ The mountains and the seashore: A stroll along the beach is always good for refreshing the mind and nourishing the soul. Especially at busy times. I enjoy this immensely at our farm Melaleiti. Above is Blálilja (Mertensia maritima) – Oysterleaf or Sea bluebells with Skarðsheiði mountain range in the back. Below Snæfellsjökull glacier pictured over Kotatangi skerry with a sole cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo).

♦ Föstudagsmyndin: Sumarsólstöður við Borgarfjörð, 21. júní 2013 kl. 23:32. Eftir dumbung og rigningu skein sólin, rétt áður en hún settist. Ég kenni erfðafræðinni um þetta væmna myndefni, örvæntingin seitlar um æðarnar: Ekki fara, ekki skilja okkur eftir í myrkrinu! Einkum í erfðum hins norræna manns lifir ólæknandi sólardýrkandi (og deyr, þegar hann fer flatt á ofneyslunni).

♦ Photo Friday: Summer solstice by Borgarfjörður and Faxaflói Bay, June 21. at 11:32 pm. The weather in June has otherwise been cold, rainy, windy, dull. I know, I know … I am such a sucker for this particular spot on earth and the view from the family farm. And I can’t help taking these sentimental photos of the sunset. It must be in the genes, to long so terribly for the sun and brighter days: Please, don’t leave us in the dark …

Snæfellsjökull | At the gate to the centre of the earth!

♦ Föstudagsmyndin – frá laugardegi! Eins og svo margir hef ég dáðst að Snæfellsjökli úr fjarlægð frá því ég man eftir mér. Mig hefur lengi dreymt um að horfa þaðan yfir Faxaflóann, í stað þess að horfa þangað. Í gær var veðrið og tækifærið til þess að njóta útsýnisins úr u.þ.b. 1440 metrum. Og fá sér salibunu niður Miðþúfu! Líklega er hver að verða síðastur á jökulinn sem hefur sífellt minnkað undanfarin ár vegna hlýnandi loftslags.

♦ Photo Friday – delayed! I have admired Snæfellsjökull from a distance across the Faxaflói Bay since childhood. Not because of Jules Verne’s fiction or the glaciers alleged magical powers, but simply because of its beauty and picturesque grandeur. Yesterday I got the chance to enjoy the spectacular view from the top of the glacier – and to take a ride down the highest peak of the icy summit!

Hopefully I can get up there again before too long. Snæfellsjökull is shrinking and melting fast as the global temperature gets higher. Every summer I look across the bay and see more of the lava mountain and less of the white glacier. Still an active volcano, Snæfellsjökull has its powers and is, in that sense, an entry to the boiling centre of the earth …
