Skrímslin á skjánum | Monster-zoom!
Skrímslaþing: Norræna skrímslabandalagið hittist á skjánum á dögunum en auðvitað nýtum við tæknina til fulls og virðum ströngustu sóttvarnir á tímum heimsfaraldurs. Þó það nú væri. Við fögnuðum góðum umsögnum um nýju bókina okkar, Skrímslaleik, og spáðum jafnvel aðeins í framtíðina … Litla skrímslið, stóra skrímslið og loðna skrímslið höfðu líka eitt og annað til málanna að leggja, en þau vilja umfram allt hafa nóg fyrir stafni og helst ekki gefa okkur höfundunum mikið frí. En allt hefur sinn tíma. Úr fjarlægari útlöndum er það svo helst að frétta að bókin Stór skrímsli gráta ekki er væntanleg á japönsku hjá litlu útgáfufélagi í Tokyo, Yugi Publishers. Þessi útgáfutíðindi komu m.a. fram í frétt hjá Miðstöð íslenskra bókmennta svo við erum ekki að ljóstra upp neinu leyndarmáli. Samningurinn var undirritaður í sumar, 2021.
The monsters meet: The Nordic Monster Alliance had an online meeting this week. Of course we make use of all the available technology in the times of the pandemic when travels and gatherings are troublesome. We discussed and celebrated good reviews of our new book, Monster Act (Skrímslaleikur), and even tried to look a little bit ahead – into the future… could there be a chance for a meeting in the flesh? Little monster, Big monster and Furry monster also had some things to contribute, but above all they want action and activity and preferably not give us authors much time off. But everything has its time. From more distant lands, the news are out that our book Big Monsters Don’t Cry (Stór skrímsli gráta ekki) is to be translated and published in Japanese by a small publishing company in Tokyo, Yugi Publishers. This is stated in the news at the Icelandic Literature Center, so we are not revealing any secrets. We signed the agreement this summer, 2021.

Viðtal við Kalle Güettler | Interview with co-author Kalle Güettler
Blaðagrein: Í héraðsblaðinu Norrtelje Tidning birtist á dögunum fínt viðtal við Kalle Güettler, sænska meðhöfundinn að skrímslabókaflokknum, um samstarf okkar höfundanna þriggja. Þar var líka fjallað um nýjustu bókina, Skrímslaleik, sem á sænsku heitir Teatermonster. Hér segir Kalle frá á heimasíðunni sinni. Skrímslin eru auðvitað kát yfir því að komast á dagblaðaprent, sem er ekki endilega gefið mál á stafrænum tímum. Teatermonster er kemur út hjá forlaginu Argasso.
Newspaper article: The local newspaper Norrtelje Tidning recently published a very nice interview with Kalle Güettler, our Swedish co-author of the monster book series, which also covered our latest book: Teatermonster / Skrímslaleik or Monster Act. Skrímslaleikur á sænsku | Teatermonster – Monster Act
Bókaútgáfa: Þessi eintök voru að koma með hraðpóstinum! Skrímslaleikur eða Teatermonster er komin út hjá Argasso forlaginu, Von er á íslensku útgáfunni í lok mánaðar. Hér má lesa um fyrsta sænska bókadóminn:

Skrímslaleikur: bókadómur í Svíþjóð | Teatermonster – review
Bókadómur: Það er ekki beðið með bókadómana í Svíþjóð, þó bókin okkar Skrímslaleikur sé reyndar ekki komin út. BTJ, Bibliotekstjänst í Svíþjóð, gefur reglubundið út rit með umsögnum um valdar bækur og gefur einkunn frá 1 upp í 5. Teatermonster, sem kemur út í haustbyrjun hjá Argasso forlaginu, fékk fínan dóm hjá Helene Ehriander í nýútgefnu BTJ-hefti nr 16, 2021, – og fullt hús stiga: fimm af fimm mögulegum. Þar segir til dæmis, í laufléttri þýðingu (sjá frumtexta neðar):

Book review: Although our new book in the Monster series: Monster Act is not out yet, the first book review has already been published in Sweden. The Swedish Library Magazine, BTJ, Bibliotekstjänst publishes reviews on selected books, giving grades from 1 to í 5. Monster Act is published by Argasso and received a fine review from lecturer Helene Ehriander in the last magazine, rating Monster Act with with 5 points. Swedish quotation above, translation below:

Skrímsli á leiðinni | Monsters on the way
Nýjar bækur og endurprentanir: Það er komið að því að kynna nýja bók eftir okkur félagana í skrímsla-þríeykinu! Bókin Teatermonster er nú þegar komin í kynningu hjá forlaginu okkar í Svíþjóð, Argasso, en Skrímslaleikur kemur út hjá Máli og menningu / Forlaginu í haust sem og Bókadeildinni í Færeyjum.
Að auki koma út tvær endurútgáfur á íslensku: Skrímslapest og Skrímsli í heimsókn og heilar fimm endurútgáfur á færeysku: Nei! segði lítla skrímsl, Myrkaskrímsl, Skrímslasótt, Skrímslahæddir, og Skrímslavitjan. Það var því í mörgu að snúast á skrifstofu skrímslanna á Melhaganum. Höfundar og ritstjórar í þremur löndum sendu inn breytingar og viðbætur og þegar gömul og glötuð skjöl finnast ekki verður að gera sumt upp á nýtt. Allt skiptir máli á síðustu metrunum: kommurnar, bilin, millimetrarnir. Svo ekki sé minnst á villur sem hafa slæðst inn! Við höfum verið lánsöm með góða ritstjóra í öllum löndum og ég get vottað að röntgenaugu Sigþrúðar á Forlaginu eru ómetanleg.
Þegar listrænni angist yfir myndum og texta loks sleppir er ég ævinlega á nálum yfir því að koma prentskjölum frá mér þannig að úr verði sómasamleg bók. Til dæmis eru prentprófílar merkilegar skepnur. Útkoman á prentverki er á endanum einhverskonar sáttargerð milli hugmynda og hæfni og milli tækni og þess áþreifanlega. Þegar ný bók kemur út er ég svo gjörn á að stara á möguleg mistök að mér þykir best að henda bókinni út í horn og líta ekki á hana. Eina ráðið er þó að halda áfram og trúa því að gera megi betur næst.
Litið um öxl … Ég hef oftast unnið að bókunum mínum á fleiri en einum stað: á vinnustofu á Grensás hjá Sigurborgu Stefáns og í Melaleiti. En vegna smitfaraldursins og ýmissa utanaðkomandi aðstæðna varð vinnuhornið heima að taka við skrímslafárinu. Því til viðbótar mátti ég heita múruð inni, en framkvæmdir við húsið hafa staðið yfir í nær hálft ár með drynjandi múrbroti og vélanna söng. Ógleymanlegur tími í mörgu tilliti. Áfram herjar veirupestin á okkur, sem aldrei fyrr. Sannkölluð skrímslapest!
New books and reprints: It’s time to introduce a new book about Little Monster and Big Monster, by us three co-authors Áslaug, Kalle and Rakel! Our new book in the Monster series, Monster Act, has already been presented by our publishing house in Sweden, Argasso, where the title is Teatermonster. Skrímslaleikur in Icelandic will be published by Mál og menning / Forlagið this autumn, as well as by Bókadeildin in the Faroe Islands, under the same title.
In addition, two titles in Icelandic will be reprinted: Skrímslapest (Monster Flu) and Skrímsli í heimsókn (Monster Visit) and a total of five titles in Faroese will be reprinted: Nei! segði lítla skrímsl, Myrkaskrímsl, Skrímslasótt, Skrímslahæddir, and Skrímslavitjan. There was therefore a lot going on at the monsters’ office in Melhagi, as authors and editors in three countries sent and submitted changes and additions, and when old and lost documents are not found, some have to be reconstructed. Every tiny thing matters at the last meters: the commas, the spaces, the millimeters. Not to mention errors that have crept in! We have been fortunate to have good editors in all countries and I my editor Sigþrúður’s x-ray eyes are invaluable.
When I finally (try to) let go of the artistic anguish over text and illustrations and turn to work on the book design and layout, I am always anxious about if the printing documents on my screen will ever come out as a decent book. The result, a printed book, is ultimately a kind of reconciliation between ideas and skills and between technology and the tangible. When a new book is published, I tend to stare at possible mistakes and prefer to throw the book into a corner and not look at it at all. (Bad PR!) Still, there is only one thing to do: keep going and believe that one can do a little bit better next time.
Looking back … I have usually worked on my books in more than one place: in my friend Sigurborg Stefans’ spacious studio and at our farm Melaleiti. But due to the pandemic and various other external circumstances, my work corner at home had to do for this monster session. In addition, I was somewhat locked up inside with windows and balcony closed as construction work on the house has been going on for almost half a year, with machines singing. An unforgettable time in many ways. The plague of covid-19 continues in Iceland, with rising numbers of infections – mostly in fully vaccinated people. Truly a Monster Flu!
