Nei! í Eistlandi

Bókaútgáfan NORÐUR er eistneskt forlag sem stofnað var árið 2023 og hefur það að markmiði að gefa út norrænar barna- og unglingabókmenntir. Fyrsta bókin um skrímslin, Nei! sagði litla skrímslið, kom út á dögunum hjá forlaginu NORÐUR undir titlinum Ei! ütles väike koll. Þýðandi er Kadri Sikk.

Við höfundarnir erum stoltir yfir því að skrímslin okkar bæti við sig nítjánda tungumálinu og vonum að fleiri bækur í bókaflokknum eigi erindi til eistneskra barna.

Ei! in Estonia

NORÐUR publishing is a small publishing house established in 2023 with the aim of publishing Nordic children’s and young adult literature. The first book in the Monster series, No! said the little monster, was recently published by NORÐUR by the title Ei! ütles väike koll, translated by Kadri Sikk.

We are proud that our monsters are now adding the nineteenth language to the collection and hope that with time more books in the series will reach Estonian children.

Kvik skrímsli í Japan

Bókaútgáfan Yugi Shobou í Tokyo hefur gefið út þrjár bækur í bókaflokknum um skrímslin. Útgefendur hafa verið einstaklega iðnir við að kynna bækurnar með sýningum, vinnustofum og uppákomum. Hreyfimynd var gerð eftir myndlýsingunum í Skrímsli í myrkrinu og hún notuð við fjölmenna upplestra. Hér má lesa kynningu á vef Tama-borgar en þar hafa m.a. farið fram sýningar á hreyfimyndinni.

Animations in Japan

The Tokyo-based publishing house Yugi Shobou has published three books in the Monsters series. The publishers have been doing a great work promoting the books with exhibitions, workshops and events. An animated film was made based on the illustrations in Monsters in the Dark and used for public readings. The titles published in Japanese are Monster Flu, かいぶつかぜ, Monsters in the Dark, まっくらやみのかいぶつ, and Big Monsters Don’t Cry, おおきいかいぶつはなかないぞ. All translated by Shohei Akakura. See more at the publishers website and Instagram.

Brúðuleikur í Noregi

Í Noregi heldur leikkonan Adele Duus áfram að flytja brúðuleikverkið sem hún samdi upp úr bókinni Skrímsli í heimsókn. Verkið er farandleikhúsverk og útileikhús sem Adele frumsýndi í febrúar 2022. Monsterbesøk nýtur enn mikilla vinsælda og er eitt af verkunum á leikárinu hjá Lys levende Adele.

Puppets in Norway

In Norway, actress Adele Duus continues to perform the puppet play she created from our book Skrímsli í heimsókn or Monsters Visit and premiered in February 2022. It is a traveling theater, mostly performed outdoors, by this energetic one-woman-theater, Lys levende Adele. The piece Monsterbesøk is still very popular and will continue to be available for Norwegian children in 2025.

Endurprentanir í Svíþjóð

Í Svíþjóð hafa síðustu tveir titlarnir í skrímslabókaflokknum verið í góðum höndum hjá bókaforlaginu Argasso. Fyrirtæki Kalle Güettler tók hins vegar við eldri titlum og hafa þær bækur verið endurútgefnar undir merkjum „Kalle Skrivare“. Eftirspurnin hefur verið með ágætum og á síðasta ári voru endurútgefnir tveir titlar: Nej! sa lilla monster og Stora monster gråter inte. Um prentun sér Författares Bokmaskin og í ár fengu skrímslin heiðursess í dagatali prentmiðlunarinnar 2025.

More monsters in Sweden

In Sweden, the last two titles in the Monster book series have been in good hands with Argasso publishing house. My co-author Kalle Güettler‘s company took over the older titles and those previous titles have been republished under the lable of “Kalle Skrivare”. Demand has been excellent and last year two titles were reissued: Nej! sa lilla monster and Stora monster gråter inte. The printing is arranged and done by Författares Bokmaskin (the Writer’s Press) and this year the monsters were honored by being selected for the press’s calendar 2025.

The book series about Big Monster, Little Monster and Furry monster is published by Forlagið, see further information about the new book here and in English here. The latest book, Monster Party, is available in four languages already: published in Swedish by Argasso and in Danish by Vild Maskine. Skrímslin í Danmörku – beint í mark! | The Monster series in Denmark

Bókadómur og útgáfa: Bókaútgáfan Vild Maskine tók við útgáfu skrímslaseríunnar af Torgaard-útgáfunni og hefur nú útgefið eða endurútgefið allar bækurnar í bókaflokknum. Í ár komu út þrjár bækur: endurútgáfur af Monsterbesøg og Monsterklammeri og svo nýjasta bókin: Monsterfest. Það er búið að gefa út dóm dönsku bókasafnsþjónustunnar, DBC, um Monsterfest, sem fær góða góma þar eins og víðar. Marion Tirsgaard segir bókina vera „algjört möst“ á bókasafninu og segir svo eitthvað á þessa lund:

„Enn eitt skotið sem hittir beint í mark í þessari heillandi bókaröð um litla skrímslið, stóra skrímslið og loðna skrímslið, sem í hér fara í gegnum allar tilfinningar frá eftirvæntingu til vonbrigða og gleði. Einfaldur söguþráðurinn er borinn uppi af skondnum og köntuðum myndlýsingum, sem þrátt fyrir grófar línur eru fullar af tjáningu og persónuleika. Book review and release: The publishing house Vild Maskine took over the publishing of the monster series from Torgaard Publishing and it has now published or republished all the books in the book series. This year, three books were published: reprints of Monsterbesøg and Monsterklammeri and then the latest book: Monsterfest (Skrímslaveisla / Monster Party). Editors at the Danish Library Central (DBC) have published a review of Monsterfest, – yet another important book review for authors and publishers. Editor Marion Tirsgaard says the book is “a must” in the library and then says something along the lines of:

“Another hit in the charming series about Little Monster, Big Monster and Furry Monster, which in this book goes through all the emotions from anticipation to disappointment and joy. The simple plot is lifted by the crooked and angular illustrations, which, despite the rough lines, are full of expression and personality. You can never go wrong with Big Monster and Little Monster, and this book is absolutely no exception.”

Skrímslaveisla: umsögn í Svíþjóð | Review in Sweden

Bókadómur: Skrímslaveisla kom út í Svíþjóð í nóvember hjá Argasso. Dómar sænsku bókasafnsþjónustunnar, BTJ, eru mikilvægir fyrir höfunda og útgefendur en Skrímslaveisla fékk góða umsögn eins og fyrri bækur. Svo segir um Monsterfest, – í lauslegri þýðingu:

„Textinn er hluti af myndunum á spennandi og tjáningarríkan hátt þar sem hann miðlar líka tilfinningum á myndrænan máta og form bókarinnar er notað til að undirstrika fjölbreytta uppsetninguna. Book review: Skrímslaveisla (Monster Party) was released in Sweden in November, by the title Monsterfest. Book reviews published by the Swedish Library Center, BTJ, are important for authors and publishers, and Monsterfest got a fine review, like the previous books in the series:

“The text becomes part of the images in an exciting and expressive way as it also graphically conveys emotional expressions and the book’s slim format is also used to reinforce the varied layout. Despite the fact that there are three people involved in the creation of these picture books, the story forms an integrated unity, where each part is well considered and fits into the whole in a carefully planned and skilful way. The stories of these two monster friends have become the favorite reading of many children and it is gratifying that here there is still another book of the same high quality as the previous ones.”

Skrímslakisi – fundinn á ný! | Monster Kitty – lost and found!

Endurútgáfa: Skrímslakisa hefur verið sárt saknað úr bókaröðinni um skrímslin. Nú er þessi áttunda bók í bókaflokknum loks fáanleg aftur. Í bókinni segir frá því þegar litla skrímslið eignast kettling sem hann dýrkar og dáir. Þegar kisi hverfur verða skrímslin auðvitað að hefja leit. Bækurnar um skrímslin eru orðnar 11 talsins, en tveir titlar eru uppseldir og ófáanlegir.

Republished: This title from the Monsterseries, Monster Kitty (Skrímslakisi), has long been sold out. Skrímslakisi was first published in 2014 and received good reviews. It has now been republished, ten years later. The titles in the book series about the black and furry monsters are eleven but two titles are sold out. Hopefully they will also be republished soon!

Skrímslaveislan er klassík! | Five star review!

Bókadómur: Skrímslaveisla fékk þennan fína fimm-stjörnu bókadóm í nýjasta bókablaði Heimildarinnar. Þar skrifar Páll Baldvin Baldvinsson um bækur en hann kunni sannarlega að meta veisluna: „Enginn er svikinn af þessari bókaröð.“ „Framúrskarandi framhald á vönduðu efni.“ Það hefur oft verið fagnað af minna tilefni en fimm stjörnum og skrímslin fá sér því í það minnsta væna kökusneið af tilefninu.

Útgefandi bókaflokksins um skrímslin er Forlagið. Skrímslaveisla kemur einnig út á sænsku í næstu viku hjá Argasso forlaginu, á færeysku hjá Bókadeildinni í Torshavn í janúar og hún er einnig væntanleg hvað úr hverju á dönsku hjá Vild Maskine.

Book review: The new book in the Monsterseries, Monster Party (Skrímslaveisla), received this fine five-star book review in the latest issue of Heimildin news media. The well versed reviewer Páll Baldvin Baldvinsson proclaims the Monster book series “a classic” and the new book “An excellent sequel of a quality material.” And he adds: “No one will be disappointed by this book series.” The five stars are a good addition to the party decorations and make a good reason to celebrate and get it a nice slice of cake!

Skrímslaveisla! | Monster Party!

Upplestur og útgáfuhóf: Skrímslaveisla er komin út og því verður fagnað með glaum og gleði á morgun laugardag 12. október, kl 14 í Bókabúð Forlagsins á Fiskislóð 39. Nýja bókin um skrímslin eru sú ellefta í röðinni og í þetta sinn stefnir í mikil veisluhöld hjá litla skrímslinu, sem býður til sín heimsfrægum og merkilegum skrímslum!

Útgefandi er Forlagið, sjá nánar hér. Skrímslaveisla kemur einnig út á sænsku í nóvember, er væntanleg á dönsku nokkru síðar og á færeysku í janúar.

Skrímsli klippt og skorin | Clear-cut monsters!

Skrímsli í bígerð: Fyrr í mánuðinum sendi ég nýjar myndlýsingar í skönnun, afrakstur vinnu undanfarinna mánuða. Ný bók um vinina þrjá: litla skrímslið, stóra skrímslið og loðna skrímslið kemur út í haust, ef allt gengur að óskum.

Aðferðin við myndlýsingarnar er hin sama og fyrr: ég skissa og teikna, klippi og raða, lita og lími. Ég hef oft reytt hár mitt (sem kann að útskýra hárafarið) yfir aðferðinni sem ég valdi fyrstu bókinni. Það gengur ekki að skipta algerlega um aðferð þó það megi auðvitað sjá einhverja þróun í myndsmíðinni frá því fyrir meira en 20 árum. En með límklístraða fingur hugsa ég mér stundum þegjandi þörfina og velti fyrir mér hversu margar þúsundir bita ég hafi klippt og klístrað í þágu skrímslanna. Kannski væri líka gaman að telja tennur, málaðar með pensli no. 1 eða 2 … Og af hverju ekki klippa þetta bara allt saman í tölvu? Það hef ég hugleitt líka og stundum notað þá aðferð í öðru samhengi. En þegar allt kemur til alls, er bara eitthvað ómótstæðilegt og fullnægjandi við það að vinna með höndunum: handleika verkfæri, liti, pappír. Raða, fella saman. Mistökin fylgja með, það handgerða skín einhvern veginn í gegn, þó myndvinnsla og prentun skapi síðan prentgripinn.

Gervigreindin á ugglaust eftir að gera betur. En hún verður aldrei annað en gervi.

Monsters underway: A new book in the Monsterseries is in the making. Earlier this month I sent my illustrations for scanning, as a result of my work of the past months. A new book about the three friends: Little Monster, Big Monster and Furry Monster will hopefully be published this fall.

The technique I use is the same as before: I sketch and draw, cut and collage, color and glue. I’ve often torn my hair out (I know, doesn’t look good) because of this method I chose for the first book. It impossible to change the method now (at least after so many books in the series), although you can of course see some development in the image making since more than 20 years ago. But with sticky and glued fingers, I sometimes wonder how many thousands of pieces I have cut and pasted to make monsters. Maybe it would also be fun to count teeth, painted with brush no. 1 or 2… And why not just draw digitally and put it all together on the computer? I have thought about that too and sometimes use that method in other contexts. But after all, there’s just something irresistible and fulfilling about working with your hands: handling tools, colors, paper. Arranging, combining. Mistakes are included, the handmade is always present to some extent, although image processing and printing then create a printed and processed result.

The artificial intelligence will surely eventually do better. But it will never be anything but artificial.

Gleðilega góða daga! | Celebrating Earth, summer and books

Gleðilegt sumar! Í gær var sumardagurinn fyrsti, dagur sem færir manni ævinlega sól í hjarta, sama hvernig viðrar. Degi Jarðar var líka fagnað í gær og vonandi geta sem flestir dagar verið dagar Jarðar, ekki veitir af. Sumarmyndin hér ofar er myndlýsing úr bókinni Sjáðu! sem kom út síðasta haust. Kannski svipar myndefnið dálítið til Geldingadala sem njóta nú frægðar vegna eldsumbrota.

Í dag er svo alþjóðlegur dagur bókarinnar og af því tilefni reis litla skrímslið upp af teikniborðinu (mynd neðar) og tók sér bók í hönd. Hjá mér eru nú allir dagar skrímsladagar, en ný bók í bókaflokknum um litla skrímslið og stóra skrímslið – já, og loðna skrímslið, kemur út í haust á þremur tungumálum, íslensku, sænsku og færeysku.

Days of celebration: Yesterday was the First Day of Summer in Iceland. A national holiday and an absolute favorite day for every Icelander, bringing light in our hearts no matter how the weather treats us. The days are getting brighter and winter is slowly stepping back. Yesterday was also Earth Day, putting focus on the most important issue of all: how we can restore our Earth. The illustration above is from my picturebook Sjáðu! (Look! 2020), picked for the occasion as the lambs are soon to be born and at the moment, new volcanos are forming in Iceland.

Today is the World Book Day so Little Monster (below) picked up a book to read. I am working on new illustrations for the next book in the book series about Little Monster and Big monster – and Furry Monster, so every day is a “Monster Day” at the drawing desk these days. The new book will be published in Icelandic, Swedish and Faroese this fall.
