Bókadómur – Norrtelje TidningSænska útgáfan af Skrímsli í vanda, Monster i knipa, kom út hjá bókaútgáfunni Opal í lok janúar og nú eru fyrstu dómarnir að birtast á vefmiðlum þar í landi. Margaretha Levin Blekastad skrifar afar jákvæðan ritdóm í Norrtelje Tidning: Prisbelönta Monster i knipa: “En berättelse med ett stort, varmt hjärta”‘ og segir þar meðal annars eitthvað á þessa lund, í grófri þýðingu:

Skrímsli í vanda er saga með hjartað á réttum stað, þar sem mannúð og mennska birtast í gervi úfinna skrímsla. Það er hreinn unaður að njóta mynda Áslaugar Jónsdóttur, fullum af drepfyndnum húmor, áhrifamikilli togstreitu og beittum tönnum. Það gildir ekki síst hjá litla skrímslinu sem fær að tjá gnægð tilfinninga með dapurlegu og dimmu augnaráði eða sagtenntum skellihlátri. Monster i knipa är en berättelse med ett stort, varmt hjärta, där medmänsklighet ryms i en lurvig monsterkostym. Det är en fröjd att ta del av Áslaug Jónsdóttirs bilder, som är fyllda av dråplig humor, dramatik och spetsiga tänder. Inte minst hos lilla monster, som får uttrycka en uppsjö av känslor via en sorgset sotig blick eller ett sågtandat leende.
Arbetet med monsterböckerna startade vid en workshop för 17 år sedan, där utgångspunkten var att väva en berättelse från meningen “Plötsligt knackade någon på dörren”. Sedan dess har Kalle Güettler, Rakel Helmsdal och Áslaug Jónsdóttir fortsatt berätta om de båda kompisarna i historier som bjuder på mycket igenkänning. Och, som sagt, stora doser värme, som går rakt in i hjärtat.“

Book review – Norrtelje TidningThe Swedish version of Monsters in Trouble, Monster i knipa, was released in the end of January, published Opal Publishing House. Now we are receiving the first reviews in Sweden. Margaretha Levin Blekastad writes a nice book review in the Norrtelje Tidning newspaper: “Award winning Monsters in Trouble: ‘A story with a big, warm heart’. Following is a quote from the review – in Swedish!

Det är en fröjd att ta del av Áslaug Jónsdóttirs bilder, som är fyllda av dråplig humor, dramatik och spetsiga tänder. Með samkennd að leiðarljósi | Another four star review!

Bókadómur: Á Þorláksmessu, 23. desember, birtist bókadómur um Skrímsli í vanda í Morgunblaðinu. Silja Björk Huldudóttir útdeildi fjórum stjörnum og sagði meðal annars:
„Sem fyrr bera stílhreinar, litsterkar og tjáningarríkar myndir Áslaugar söguna áfram og sumt það mikilvægasta er ekki sagt berum orðum, sem er snjallt.

Margir deila vafalítið þörf skrímslanna til að láta gott af sér leiða og komast, líkt og skrímslin, að því að ef allir leggja sitt lóð á vogarskálarnar er ekkert óyfirstíganlegt. Með samkenndina að leiðarljósi verður heimurinn að betri stað og það eru mikilvæg skilaboð til ungra lesenda.“

Book reviewOn 23. December there was a fine book review in Morgunblaðið newspaper for Skrímsli í vanda – Monsters in trouble. Critic Silja Björk Huldudóttir decorated the review with four stars and wrote:

“As before, the story is carried on by Áslaug’s colorful, clear-cut style and expressive illustrations, and some of the most important things are not written out plainly, which is clever.

There is no doubt that many share the two monster’s need to do good and find, like the monsters, that if everyone pulls their weight, nothing is unachievable. Guided by sympathy and solidarity, the world becomes a better place and that is an important message for young readers.”

Þar segir Marie Eriksson m.a.: „Söguþráður bókarinnar er afar skýr, en innihald bókarinnar vex að mikilvægi og merkingu við hvern lestur og í samtali við börnin.“

♦ Book reviewA short but nice review about No! Said Little Monster by Marie Eriksson was published just recently in Förskolan, a magazine for preschool teachers in Sweden, in an article called “Emotional monsters” (Känslomonster): “The plot is clear and simple but the book’s real subject grows in importance with every reading and meeting with the children.”

♦ Bókaumfjöllun. Í síðustu viku birtist umfjöllun í dagblaðinu Information um bækurnar sem tilnefndar voru til Barna- og unglingabókmenntaverðlauna Norðurlandaráðs 2013. Í grein sinni: „Nordisk børnelitteratur befrier sig af krop og form“ skrifar Anita Brask Rasmussen m.a. um vináttuna sem bæti einstaklinginn og um það fjalli líka Skrímslaerjur. Ennfremur segir hún:

„… Monsterskænderi er i sandhed en billedbog. Illustrationerne råber ofte højere end teksten, som er minimal. Monstrene har små skyer over hovederne, og vejret bliver dårligere og dårligere, efterhånden som de bliver uvenner. Vejret bliver sjælens spejl, og monstre kan som bekendt have meget mørke sjæle.“

♦ Book review. Last week the Danish newspaper Information reviewed all the books nominated toThe Nordic Council Children’s and Young People’s Literature Prize 2013. In the article: “Nordisk børnelitteratur befrier sig af krop og form“, Anita Brask Rasmussen writes about Skrímslaerjur’s (Monster Row)  theme of friendship, the symbolic clouds and stormy weather. She also says: “Monster Row is truly a picturebook. The illustrations often shout louder than the text, which is minimal.“

Í síðustu tveimur tölublöðum af Bookbird: a Journal of International Children’s Literature er að finna dóma um spænsku þýðingarnar af bókunum Nei! sagði litla skrímslið og Stór skrímsli gráta ekki. Í tímaritinu hefur áður birst bókadómur um skrímslin tvö og var þá Skrímsli á toppnum til umfjöllunar. Dómarnir um skrímslabækurnar þrjár eru á ensku og má lesa hér neðar á síðunni.

Bookbird er gefið út af IBBY, International Board on Books for Young People og Johns Hopkins University PressHér má finna eldri árganga tímaritsins, allt frá árinu 1963.

“No!” said the Little Monster

“With vivid and emotionally evocative illustrations, “No!”, said the Little Monster brings to life the struggle between staying silent when a friend does something wrong, or speaking up and risking the friendship. Big Monsters Don’t Cry

Los monstruos grandes no lloran goes to the heart of childhood insecurities in competition with friends. The pressure felt by the character of the big monster, who feels inadequate whenever he plays with his friend the little monster, is the dual burden of being unable to measure up to his friend’s abilities coupled with the conviction that he must not reveal his feelings of inadequacy. When he is brought to the breaking point by the little monster’s laughter at the actions of his father, he finds out that his tears are an opening to discussing his real feelings with his friend. Not only does this prompt a deepening of the friendship, but also an opportunity for the little monster to share some of the things he admires about the big monster, and a chance for the big monster to teach skills he possesses. The bold illustrations convey the emotions behind the story and bring the words to life. As a part of larger series, including a companion book called “No! Said the Little Monster”, it also shows the different perspectives inside a friendship and the way that the same situation can be perceived very differently by the individuals involved. ♦ Bókadómar. Hér koma tveir örstuttir dómar um Skrímslaerjur í sænskum tímaritum: Fjórar rósettur (eða eru það blöðrur?) og fimm snuð! „Lítill gullmoli“ segir Moa Samuelsson í VI FÖRÄLDRAR og Anna Matzinger skrifar í MAMA að bókin fjalli með „húmor og hlýju um sammannlegar tilfinningar“.

BókaútgáfaSagan af bláa hnettinum eftir Andra Snæ Magnason heldur áfram að gera víðreist. Nú er hvað úr hverju von á bresku útgáfunni hjá Pushkin Press í London. Ég fékk eintakið mitt með póstinum í síðustu viku (til hægri). Bandaríska útgáfan (til vinstri) kom út í lok síðasta árs hjá  Seven Stories Press og hefur fengið fína dóma og viðurkenningar. Báðar þessar útgáfur eru í öðru broti en íslenska frumútgáfan og dökki geimurinn á kápunni fékk að fjúka. Kápu- og bókarhönnun var í höndum erlendu útgefendanna.

 Bókadómur. School Library Journal birti á dögunum bókadóm um Söguna af bláa hnettinum og hann má lesa hér fyrir neðan. Þar segir m.a.: „Well-paced, with some wonderful, story-enhancing color illustrations.“

Book release. The UK-version of The Story of the Blue Planet by Andri Snær Magnason is soon to be released by Pushkin Press in London. I got my copy in the mail last week. The US-version (left) was published several months ago by Seven Stories Press and has received excellent reviews and honors. The two English versions have the original illustrations, but differ quite a bit from the original edition in layout. Cover and book design was made by the publishing houses.

♦ Book review. School Library Journal has published a review on The Story of the Blue Planet, stating: “Well-paced, with some wonderful, story-enhancing color illustrations.”

“Those who enjoyed Adam Gidwitz’s A Tale Dark and Grimm (Dutton, 2010) may find Magnason’s cautionary ecological tale a perfect compliment. Like Gidwitz, Magnason does not shy away from graphic descriptions of danger and death. That being said, as in all good fables, he begins with once upon a time and readers learn of an innocuous-looking blue planet floating in space. It is inhabited solely by children, who live an idyllic, although somewhat savage life (they hunt for food, even clubbing seals). They are happy and this is most fully realized once a year when the butterflies of the Blue Mountains follow the sun across the sky, a beautiful and breathtaking sight. But as in all good tales and life itself, things are never static. Enter the villain, Mr. Goodday, who lands on the planet and is discovered by the protagonists, Brimir and Hulda. Mr. Goodday, over the course of a very short time, corrupts the children by giving them the power to fly and by introducing them to, among other things, the concept of sefishness. In the process the planet is corrupted as well, affecting the entire ecosystem. After a number of harrowing events, Mr. Goodday is outsmarted by Hulda, who offers to fulfill his greatest wish in return for restoring the children and planet to their former states.
