Gleðilega góða daga! | Celebrating Earth, summer and books

Gleðilegt sumar! Í gær var sumardagurinn fyrsti, dagur sem færir manni ævinlega sól í hjarta, sama hvernig viðrar. Degi Jarðar var líka fagnað í gær og vonandi geta sem flestir dagar verið dagar Jarðar, ekki veitir af. Sumarmyndin hér ofar er myndlýsing úr bókinni Sjáðu! sem kom út síðasta haust. Kannski svipar myndefnið dálítið til Geldingadala sem njóta nú frægðar vegna eldsumbrota.

Í dag er svo alþjóðlegur dagur bókarinnar og af því tilefni reis litla skrímslið upp af teikniborðinu (mynd neðar) og tók sér bók í hönd. Hjá mér eru nú allir dagar skrímsladagar, en ný bók í bókaflokknum um litla skrímslið og stóra skrímslið – já, og loðna skrímslið, kemur út í haust á þremur tungumálum, íslensku, sænsku og færeysku.

Days of celebration: Yesterday was the First Day of Summer in Iceland. A national holiday and an absolute favorite day for every Icelander, bringing light in our hearts no matter how the weather treats us. The days are getting brighter and winter is slowly stepping back. Yesterday was also Earth Day, putting focus on the most important issue of all: how we can restore our Earth. The illustration above is from my picturebook Sjáðu! (Look! 2020), picked for the occasion as the lambs are soon to be born and at the moment, new volcanos are forming in Iceland.

Today is the World Book Day so Little Monster (below) picked up a book to read. I am working on new illustrations for the next book in the book series about Little Monster and Big monster – and Furry Monster, so every day is a “Monster Day” at the drawing desk these days. The new book will be published in Icelandic, Swedish and Faroese this fall.

Dagur bókarinnar | World Book Day 2020

Dagur bókarinnar: Hér tek ég þátt í herferð Evrópska rithöfundaráðsins sem hvatti rithöfunda og þýðendur til að birta táknrænar myndir sér og framlagi sínu til menninga og lista. „Á bak við hverja bók er listamaður“ segir þar – en þar með lýkur upptalningunni ekki því framlag listamannsins skapar fleiri störf. Í „bókabransanum“ starfa ótal stéttir: útgefendur, ritstjórar, prófarkalesarar, umbrotsfólk, prentarar, bóksalar, og þar fram eftir götum. Allt byrjar með sköpun listamannsins.

Ég mæli með bestu sumargjöfinni: góðri bók.

Börn og bókmenntahátíð | Program for children in Arabic at Reykjavík International Literary Festival

Íslenska og arabíska á bókmenntahátíð: Á sumardaginn fyrsta, fimmtudaginn 25. apríl, verður börnum flóttamanna og hælisleitenda boðið að fagna sumri með bóklestri og smiðjum í barnabókasafni Norræna hússins. Ásamt arabískumælandi túlki les ég úr bókunum um litla skrímslið og stóra skrímslið og stýri myndlistarsmiðju fyrir skrímslavini. Viðburðurinn er hluti af Bókmenntahátíð í Reykjavík í samstarfi við Rauða krossinn, IBBY á Íslandi og Norræna húsið. Dagskráin hefst kl 14:00 í Norræna húsinu, sumardaginn fyrsta. Sjá hér á Fb. Alþjóðlega bókmenntahátíðin í Reykjavík hefst á morgun 24. apríl 2019 og lýkur 27. apríl. Í dag, 23. apríl, má svo fagna Alþjóðlegum degi bókarinnar.

Workshop and reading: Reykjavík International Literary Festival offers an Arabic-Icelandic program for children in the Nordic House on The First Day of Summer, Thursday April 25th. Along with an Arabic interpreter, I will read from the book series about Little Monster and Big Monster. I will also hosts a workshop for monster friends of all ages. Place and time: The Nordic House, April 25 at 2-3 pm. See event on Facebook. The Reykjavík International Literary Festival starts tomorrow, April 24 2019, and runs until April 27. Today, April 23, is the World Book Day – so book lovers rejoice!

Dagur jarðar og dagur bókarinnar | Earth Day and World Book Day

Bókverk: Dagur jarðar var í gær og Dagur bókarinnar er í dag. Af því tilefni birti ég myndir af bókverkinu Jörð | Earth sem nú er til sýnis KCC Center for Book Arts í University of Southern Maine í Portland, BNA. Þar sýnum við ARKIR fjölda bókverka á sýningunni JAÐARLAND / BORDERLAND sem opnaði þar í janúar, en henni lýkur brátt eða 30. apríl.

Hringlaga opnurnar eru eins og sjálfstæð hvel eða jarðarkringlur, en lokuð er bókin fjórðungur úr hring og opnuð getur hún myndað hálfkúlu. Í verkinu eru ljósmyndir af fjölbreytilegu yfirborði jarðar, gjarnan þar sem vindar, frost og snjór, flóð eða þurrkar hafa reynt á þolmörk svarðar og jarðar. Líklega er okkur eðlislægt að leita í gróskumikla, frjósama og blómlega náttúru, en þessi jaðarsvæði eru ekki síður heillandi því þar opinberast oft undraverður sigur lífmagnsins. Orðið jörð hefur margar merkingar sem tengjast órjúfanlega: reikistjarnan jörð, heimkynni okkar, yfirborð jarðar, haglendi, bújörð, jarðvegurinn … – lítið orð með ofurmerkingu.

Book art: Yesterday was Earth Day 2018 and today is the World Book Day. So much to celebrate! I find it proper to post some photos of my little book art piece Jörð | Earth. This artist’s book is currently on display at the book art exhibition BORDERLAND at KCC Center for Book Arts at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, Maine, USA. There I exhibit along with other members of ARKIR Book Arts Group, but the exhibition is soon coming to an end: closes April 30.

This book is a collection of round shaped images, each one like an orb of its own. Half-open the book forms a hemisphere, closed the form is a quarter of a circle. The photographs show various surfaces of the land, of the ground: the earth. The seasons and the soil, the dirt under our feet, all what deserves to be valued and cherished and given time to observe. We tend instinctively to seek the green, fertile and flourishing nature, but the peripheral areas of the earth: the land where wind and rain, frost and snow, flood and draught make it just about habitable, are no less fascinating, as they so often reveal the amazing victory of life. The word earth has many meanings that are closely linked, indeed a small word with a huge significance!

Dagur bókarinnar | World Book Day

♦ Bókafréttir: Dagur Jarðar var í gær og þá gat ég sagt fréttir af Bláa hnettinum. Alþjóðlegur dagur bókarinnar er svo í dag. Þann dag er einmitt tilkynnt um Bókmenntaverðlaun barnanna í Svíþjóð: Bokjuryn. Þar hafa bækurnar um skrímslin jafnan komist á lista. Í dag kom líka í ljós að Skrímslaerjur (Monsterbråk) var að mati barna í Svíþjóð valin ein af 10 bestu myndabókum ársins 2013, kom þar í fjórða sæti. ♦Book News: Happy World Book Day! Here is my advice for the day: If you don’t have the time to read a big novel today, try a good picturebook. It’s like reading a solid poem, you get the whole universe of a book, a whole story, in a short text. Combined with the visual art it stimulates so many parts of your brain. And if you dare, you might even connect with that inner child of yours.

Also: Good news from Sweden this morning! Monster Squabbles or Monster Row (Skrímslaerjur) is one of 10 best picturebooks in 2013, according to Swedish children or “The Children’s Book Jury“. Se more about the winners of Bokjuryn here.

Þrír dagar | Three days

♦ Viðburðir. Í dag, 24. apríl, er síðasti vetrardagur eins og berlega kom í ljós með snjókomu í Reykjavík í morgun. Í gær, 23. apríl, var Dagur bókarinnar og alla vikuna eru áhugaverðir bókmenntaviðburðir vítt og breitt um borgina, eins og lesa má á vef Bókmenntaborgarinnar. Í fyrradag, 22. apríl, var Dagur Jarðar, þó allir dagar séu í raun dagar Jarðar og dagar góðra bóka. Á vefnum The Children’s Book Review var bent á að Sagan af bláa hnettinum eftir Andra Snæ Magnason væri ákjósanleg lesning á Degi Jarðar og það sama gerði útgefandinn, Seven Stories Press.

Eftir tæpa þrjá daga er kosið til Alþingis. Ég mæli með því að þeir sem vanræktu Dag Jarðar og Dag bókarinnar rifji upp til dæmis Draumalandið eða Söguna af bláa hnettinum fyrir kosningar. Ryksugandi sölumenn hafa safnað fiðrildadufti, slá ryki í augu, slá um sig og bjóðast til þess að negla sólina fasta yfir Íslandi. Ekki kjósa Gleði-Glaum.

♦ Events. Today, 24th of April, is the last day of winter in Iceland, so of course it snowed heavily this morning! Yesterday, 23rd of April, was World Book Day, which is celebrated the whole week in Reykjavik Unesco City of Literature, with many interesting book events. The day before, 22nd of April, was Earth Day. All in all a good reason to celebrate, although every day should be a day of the Earth and a day of a good book. In The Children’s Book Review, The Story of the Blue Planet by Andri Snær Magnason was selected on a list of recommended reading on Earth Day. The publisher, Seven Stories Press, also pointed that out.

In less than three days we have parliamentary elections in Iceland. I recommend good reading before voting: two books by Andri Snær: Dreamland: A Self-Help Guide for a Frightened Nation, and The Story of the Blue Planet. I fear that too many will put their vote on Gleesome Goodday and his promises of flying in endless sunlight.
