♦ Bókadómur. Í ýmsum vefmiðlum og útvarpi hefur verið fjallað hefur verið um bækurnar sem tilnefndar eru til Barna- og unglingabókmenntaverðlauna Norðurlandaráðs. Á vef NRK, norska ríkisútvarpsins má finna umfjöllun um allar bækurnar. Greinina má lesa hér en um Skrímslaerjur segir Anne Cathrine Straume m.a. þetta:

„Monstrene skildres i viltre tegninger, sterkt dramatisert, slik teksten også iblant roper til oss med fete typer. Fargene har stor betydning; de to monstrene er begge sorte og hårete, det store har grønn nese, det lille rød. Og se om ikke de to viser hengivelse på bokens siste side, der de spiser epler, Store Monster et rødt eple og Lille Monster et grønt …
Kraftfull, morsom og godt gjennomført; det er lett å skjønne at barn kan bli glad i disse to fyrene.“

Á RÚV hafa stjórnendur þáttarins Orð um bækur ekki látið sitt eftir liggja. Nú síðast var farið vítt og breitt yfir allar bækur sem tilnefndar eru til Bókmenntaverðlauna Norðurlandaráðs, spáð og spekúlerað í verðlaunin í þætti með yfirskriftina: Á miðvikudag, 30. október, vitum við hver? Brynhildur Heiðar- og Ómarsdóttir og Jórunn Sigurðardóttir gáfu þar Skrímslaerjum svo góðar umsagnir að það hálfa væri nóg. ♦ Book review. On the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation’s website (NRK) there’s a very fine article by Anne Cathrine Straume about all the nominated books to The Nordic Council’s Children’s and Young People’s Literature Prize 2013.

♦ Bókadómar. Í síðustu tveimur tölublöðum af Bookbird: a Journal of International Children’s Literature er að finna dóma um spænsku þýðingarnar af bókunum Nei! sagði litla skrímslið og Stór skrímsli gráta ekki. Í tímaritinu hefur áður birst bókadómur um skrímslin tvö og var þá Skrímsli á toppnum til umfjöllunar. Dómarnir um skrímslabækurnar þrjár eru á ensku og má lesa hér neðar á síðunni.

Bookbird er gefið út af IBBY, International Board on Books for Young People og Johns Hopkins University Press. Hér má finna eldri árganga tímaritsins, allt frá árinu 1963.

♦ Book reviews. In the last two issues of Bookbird: a Journal of International Children’s Literature there are nice reviews of the Spanish editions of the first two books in the Monster series: ¡No!, dijo el pequeño monstruo and Los monstruos grandes no lloran. A review of Monster at the Top has been published earlier. Bookbird is an academic journal that publishes articles on children’s literature with an international perspective. “No!” said the Little Monster

“With vivid and emotionally evocative illustrations, “No!”, said the Little Monster brings to life the struggle between staying silent when a friend does something wrong, or speaking up and risking the friendship. When the big monster comes over to play, the little monster runs through a list of all the times in the past when his friend has caused damage or hurt others’ feelings and the little monster hadn’t dared to say anything. Big Monsters Don’t Cry

“Los monstruos grandes no lloran goes to the heart of childhood insecurities in competition with friends. The pressure felt by the character of the big monster, who feels inadequate whenever he plays with his friend the little monster, is the dual burden of being unable to measure up to his friend’s abilities coupled with the conviction that he must not reveal his feelings of inadequacy. When he is brought to the breaking point by the little monster’s laughter at the actions of his father, he finds out that his tears are an opening to discussing his real feelings with his friend. Not only does this prompt a deepening of the friendship, but also an opportunity for the little monster to share some of the things he admires about the big monster, and a chance for the big monster to teach skills he possesses. The bold illustrations convey the emotions behind the story and bring the words to life. As a part of larger series, including a companion book called “No! Monster at the Top

Bókadómur í norsku vefriti | Book review in Barnebokkritikk.no

♦ Bókadómur. Skrímslaerjur fá ljómandi góða umsögn í norska vefritinu Barnebokkritikk.no, en þar hafa að undanförnu verið birtir bókadómar um bækur sem tilnefndar eru til Barna- og unglingabókmenntaverðlauna Norðurlandaráðs. Hér má lesa allan dóminn. Í dómi sínum fjallar Olga Holownia ítarlega um myndirnar og bókarhönnunina og segir til dæmis þetta:

„Med sine renskårne karakterer, dristige bruk av svart-hvitt, og dermed desto mer effektiv fargebruk, utgjør Skrímslaerjur en svært forfriskende tilnærming til billedboksjangeren – blottet for søtladen, rosa ynde.“

20 bóka listinn | Books from Iceland

♦ Bókasýningin í Frankfurt 2013 hefst í dag og stendur til 12. október. Miðstöð íslenskra bókmennta hefur tekið saman sérstakan lista sem telur 20 bækur frá árinu 2012. Bókalistinn verður kynntur á bókasýningunnni, en þar á blaði má m.a. finna Skrímslaerjur. Á heimasíðu Miðstöðvarinnar er listinn kynntur svo: „Ætlunin er að taka saman slíkan lista á hverju ári sem síðan verður kynntur á bókasýningum erlendis. Systurstofnanir miðstöðvarinnar, m.a. í Noregi, Finnlandi og Hollandi, hafa um árabil útbúið sambærilega lista með góðum árangri.“
Það er líka helst í fréttum að aldrei hafa fleiri íslenskar bækur verið þýddar á erlendar tungur. Um það má lesa hér. Vonandi dregur tuttugu-bóka-listinn athyglina að enn fleiri íslenskum bókum í Frankfurt.

♦ The Frankfurt Book Fair 2013 starts today. The Icelandic Literature Center has made a special list of 20 books that were published in 2012. The list is to be presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair this week. Skrímslaerjur (Monster Squabbles) is on the list, so hopefully our hairy heroes make some friends in Germany!

Kynning á verðlaunum | The Nordic Council’s prize for children’s literature

♦ Tilnefning. Skrímslaerjur eru, eins og kunnugt er, tilnefndar til nýju norrænu barnabókaverðlaunanna eða Barna- og unglingabókmenntaverðlauna Norðurlandaráðs. Verðlaunin voru m.a. kynnt í Norræna húsinu á Bókmenntahátíð í Reykjavík með þátttöku tveggja tilnefndra höfunda: Nuka K. Godtfredsen og mín. Meðhöfundur okkar í Svíþjóð, Kalle Güettler, stendur svo í ströngu á bókakaupstefnunni í Gautaborg 2013 og kynnir þar sænsku útgáfuna, Monsterbråk, áritar bækur og tekur þátt í umræðum um verðlaunin.

Hér má lesa pistil frá Kalle um kynningu Norðurlandaráðs (eða skort á sama) á nýju verðlaununum í tengslum við bókmessuna í Gautaborg.

♦ Nomination for a brand new prize calls for introductions of various sorts. So is it with the newly established Nordic Council’s prize for children’s and young people’s literature – and our nominated book from the Monster series: Skrímslaerjur. In association with The Reykjavik International Literary Festival 2013 there was an event in the Nordic House two weeks ago, where I took part. And this weekend my co-author Kalle Güettler is busy at Göteborg Book Fair, where he is introducing the Swedish version: Monsterbråk.

Skrímslahöfundar fá umfjöllun í Norrtelje Tidning í dag, en þar er viðtal við Kalle Güettler vegna tilnefningarinnar til Barna- og unglingabókaverðlauna Norðurlandaráðs fyrir Skrímslaerjur. Útgefandi okkar í Svíþjóð, Kabusa Böcker, sendi líka frá sér fréttatilkynningu um tilnefninguna nú á dögunum, en Kalle mun árita bækur og vera til viðtals á bókamessunni í Gautaborg, sem haldin verður í lok mánaðarins.

My co-author of the monster series, Swedish author Kalle Güettler, was interviewed in Norrtelje Tidning today, on account of our nomination to the new Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize for Skrímslaerjur (Monster Squabbles). Our publisher in Sweden, Kabusa Böcker, has also recently published a press release about the nomination as Kalle will be available for interviews and book signing at Göteborg Book Fair on Sept. 27th.

♦ Skrímslablogg. Pistlarnir um skrímslin á Kabloggen verða ekki fleiri að sinni, síðustu póstar birtust 31. júlí þegar skrímslabókahöfundarnir þökkuðu pent fyrir sig á sænsku og dönsku. ♦ Bókadómar. Hér koma tveir örstuttir dómar um Skrímslaerjur í sænskum tímaritum: Fjórar rósettur (eða eru það blöðrur?) og fimm snuð! „Lítill gullmoli“ segir Moa Samuelsson í VI FÖRÄLDRAR og Anna Matzinger skrifar í MAMA að bókin fjalli með „húmor og hlýju um sammannlegar tilfinningar“.

Bankað á dyr | Knock-knock!

♦ Skrímslablogg. Í júlí skrifum við skrímslahöfundarnir til skiptis pistla á Kabloggen – höfundabloggi Kabusa-forlagsins. Færslurnar eru auðvitað allar á einn eða annan hátt tengdar skrímslabókunum.

Rakel Helmsdal skrifaði röð af færslum um það hvernig við sækjum hugmyndir til atburða í bernsku en líka til nýlegra atvika. Pistlarnir eru á dönsku og má lesa hér og hér og hér!

Kalle Güettler skrifaði um vinnuna sem tók við eftir stutt hugarflug á námskeiði, en þrjú ár liðu frá því að við hittumst fyrst og þar til fyrsta bókin kom út. Pistillinn er á sænsku og má lesa hér.

Í gær skrifaði ég út frá þessum pistlum þeirra Kalle og Rakel: eða um samruna hugmynda, vinnuferli og auk þess um aðalumfjöllunarefni skrímslabókanna: tilfinningar! Pistilinn: Når idéen banker på (och lite om känslor) má lesa hér. Þar birti ég m.a. mynd af smábók sem ég gerði í hádegishléi á margumræddu námskeiði á Biskops-Arnö árið 2001, en á námskeiðinu áttum við að skrifa út frá setningunni: „Það er bankað á dyrnar“. Smábókin er örsaga án orða, en þessi litla æfing nýttist sennilega bæði í fyrstu skrímslabókina: Nei! sagði litla skrímslið og í bókina Gott kvöld sem kom út nokkrum árum síðar. Meira um Gott kvöld hér. Bókaruppkastið, sem er ein A4-örk brotin og skorin, má sjá hér til hliðar.

Rakel Helmsdal wrote a series of posts about how we get ideas from our childhood but also from meeting grown-up monsters as adults!

Kalle Güettler wrote about the work that came as a result of our first meeting at the workshop for Nordic authors and illustrators on the island Biskop-Arnö. It took us three years to finish the first book: No! said Little Monster.

Yesterday I wrote a blog post, a bit as a response to their posts: on the importance of sharing ideas, how ideas merge together; and about the major subject in our books: mainly feelings! Monstrous feelings of all sorts! I also wrote about a little sketch I made in a lunch break at the workshop in 2001, where we three met. One of the assignments was to write something inspired from the sentence: “There was knocking on the door”. I did a mini-book without words, a draft, a sketch of my idea. (See the picture on the right). I think that some elements and features from the sketch appear in our first book: No! said Little Monster, but also in a another book of mine: Gott kvöld. ♦ Monster blog. My monster-co-author in the Faroe Islands, Rakel Helmsdal, runs a wonderful little puppet theater: Karavella Marionett-Teatur. On our Swedish publishers website, Kabloggen, she writes about the making of the monster puppets for the show Skrímslini. She writes in Danish but there are also a number of nice photos of her work for everyone to enjoy, like the one here above: where Little Monster is on stage and in the background silhouettes made from illustrations in the books. Bloggað á svönsku| Swedish Monster blog in July

♦ Skrímslin blogga! Sænsku útgefendur okkar skrímslanna, Kabusa böcker, halda úti vefdagbók, KABLOGGEN, þar sem höfundar blogga um bækurnar sínar og fleira. Þaðan ætlum við Kalle og Rakel að senda fréttaskeyti af skrímslum og almennum sumarönnum í júlí. Við Rakel ræddum nokkuð möguleika okkar á að setja met í sænskum ambögum en ekki er útséð með þá tign. Í gegnum tólf ára samstarf höfum við þrjú þróað skandinavískt samskiptamál sem við notum mikið okkar á milli, þ.e. svönsku. Þó ritmálið sé ekki fullþróað er ekki ólíklegt að við notum það á blogginu … En Kalle Güttler hóf skrifin í dag á púra sænsku og færslu hans um upphafið að skrímslaævintýrinu má lesa hér: Nordiska monster i full fart!

♦ Skrímslahöfundar. Fyrir áhugasama um skrímslabækurnar sjö um skrímslin tvö má benda á að meðhöfundar mínir Kalle Güettler í Svíþjóð og Rakel Helmsdal í Færeyjum sitja ekki auðum höndum á milli þess sem þau skapa með mér skrímslasögur. Kíkið endilega á heimasíðurnar þeirra!

Kalle er nýbúinn að gefa út myndaskáldsögu fyrir unglinga sem heitir Hämnd (myndir: Viktor Engholm, útgefandi Argasso förlag) sem hefur fengið glimrandi dóma eins og lesa má hér og hér. Kalle skrifar svo hér á sænsku um samstarf okkar höfundanna: En trehövdad författare med fötterna i varsitt land.

♦ Monster authors! My co-authors of the monsterseries are busy in their homelands: Kalle Güettler in Sweden and Rakel Helmdal in Faroe Islands. Check out what they are up to!

Kalle‘s graphic novel Hämnd (Revenge – publisher Argasso förlag, illustrations: Viktor Engholm) has just been released and has already received very fine reviews. (In Swedish here and here.) Rakel is preparing a new play at her puppet theater: Karavella Marionett Teatur. The play is based on her own story for a piece of music by Kári Bæk, the fairytale:Veiða vind (Hunting Wind). It was played at Harpa by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, earlier this spring, and the Icelandic translation of the book with illustrations by Janus á Húsagarði was also published by Forlagið Publishing. Rakel has a lot of great photos from her working process on her website. She is also working on a new book, hopefully soon to be published.

Í tilefni af fréttum gærdagsins um tilnefningar til Barna- og unglingabókmenntaverðlauna Norðurlandaráðs ætla ég að birta mynd sem við höfundar skrímslabókanna höfum stundum notað í skólaheimsóknum og þá með texta á viðeigandi tungumáli. Börn allt niður í leikskólaaldur skilja hvernig við vinnum: semjum sögurnar saman öll þrjú, ég til dæmis teikna myndir OG sem sögur jöfnum höndum. Þetta gera þau nefnilega oft sjálf, ein eða með öðrum. Það þarf ekki að velja að gera aðeins annað tveggja. Stundum má meira að segja gera tvennt í einu. Þetta vita þeir sem geta hjólað OG sungið um leið. Byggt sandkastala, brýr og vegi OG um leið sagt söguna af drekanum sem býr í kastalanum.

♦ Nomination. The nomination of Skrímslaerjur (Monster Squabbles) to the Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize has brought up questions about us three authors of the Monster series. “How do you work together? Who makes what – since you are three?” There tends to be some confusion about the collaborative authorship. Two authors of a short picture book text seems to be already over the top, three therefore unthinkable. Well, think again: the illustrator also writes the stories! Or, if you like: one of the authors also illustrates!
We often bring this illustrative picture along with us when we visit schools or give talks about our books. Kids have no trouble understanding that you can both draw and tell or write a story. They do it all the time.

♦ Tilnefning. Þá er búið að opinbera hvaða bækur eru tilnefndar til nýju Norrænu barnabókaverðlaunanna og Skrímslaerjur eru þar á meðal! Við skrímslin erum glöð og stolt yfir heiðrinum, hneigjum okkur og beygjum.

Skrímslaerjur er sjöunda bókin um litla skrímslið og stóra skrímslið eftir okkur höfundana þrjá: Áslaugu Jónsdóttur, Kalle Güettler og Rakel Helmsdal.

♦ Bókadómur. „Nefið á þér er eins og mygluð pylsa! – Hafið þið nokkurn tíma heyrt betri móðgun en þessa?“ spyrja gagnrýnendur BOKUNGE, sem er sænskur vefur um barnabækur fyrir yngstu lesendurna. Þar fá Skrímslaerjur góða umsögn: „Stórkostlega skemmtileg bók um ósætti og hve illa getur farið þegar reiðin tekur völdin og hvernig samviskubitið getur nagað bæði í höfði og maga.“

♦ Bókadómur. „Skemmtileg deilugjörn skrímsli“ hljómar fyrirsögnin á bókadómi Peter Grönborg í Borås Tidningen í Svíþjóð, en þar fjallar hann um sænsku útgáfuna af Skrímslaerjum: Monsterbråk. Í dóminum segir m.a.: „Funandi tilfinningasveiflunum er lýst með hlýjum húmor. Sáttasenurnar eru óborganlegar.“ Þó þetta sé sjöunda bókin um skrímslin finnur Peter engin þreytumerki á höfundarverkinu og sendir okkur því skýlausa hvatningu: Fleiri bækur!

♦ Bókadómur. Skrímslaerjur á sænsku, Monsterbråk, fengu fínan dóm í dagblaðinu Norrtelje Tidning í morgun. Sænska útgáfan kom út á dögunum hjá Kabusa Böcker í Gautaborg. Í bókadóminum segir Margaretha Levin Blekastad m.a. eitthvað á þessa lund: „Bækurnar um litla og stóra skrímslið eru aðlaðandi á svalan hátt, með stórbrotnum myndum og djörfum sjónarhornum. … Það er eitthvað við sauðþráa kergjuna og hárbeittar tennur litla skrímslisins sem hittir beint í hjartastað.“

Skrifandi teiknari | The writing illustrator

♦ Myndlýsingar. Í Fréttatímanum í dag (bls 58) fjallar Gunnar Smári Egilsson um það framúrskarandi góða starf sem Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands hefur unnið með vönduðum tónleikum og efni fyrir börn. Verður það starf seint oflofað. Í greininni er bent á tónleika Sinfóníuhljómsveitarinnar á færeyska tónlistarævintýrinu „Veiða vind“ sem er tónverk eftir Kára Bæk, ævintýri skrifað af Rakel Helmsdal og myndlýst af Janusi á Húsagarði. Ævintýrið kom nýverið út hjá Forlaginu í þýðingu Þórarins Eldjárns og auðvitað fylgir tónlistardiskur með. Ég get heilshugar mælt með frábærri tónsmíð, sögu og myndum.

Rakel Helmsdal er ásamt okkur Kalle Güettler í þríeykinu sem semur bækurnar um litla skrímslið og stóra skrímslið. Og loks kem ég mér að efninu: Eftir sjö bækur um skrímslin tvö, leikrit um þau í Þjóðleikhúsinu, umfjöllun í blöðum og tímaritum er ég enn afskrifuð sem höfundur textans. Ég get nefnilega teiknað. Og þá er stundum eins og það sé óhugsandi að ég geti jafnframt ritað texta. Eða öfugt. Gunnar Smári er ekki einn um þessa villu, ég var fyrir skemmstu að lesa sambærilegan misskilning í sænsku riti. Gott og vel, öllum getur yfirsést að lesa kreditsíðurnar, en hugsanavillan liggur þó fyrst og fremst og langoftast í þeirri meinloku að myndirnar séu fylgifiskar sem allt eins megi sleppa, en textinn aðalmálið. Jafnvel í hreinræktuðum myndabókum þar sem ég er ein höfundur texta og mynda hefur mér verið hrósað í lok umfjöllunar fyrir að teikna myndirnar sjálf! Sko til! Eins og ég hafi ákveðið á síðustu metrunum að smella nokkrum myndum með. Í myndabókum liggur sagan, frásögnin, höfundarverkið, jafnt eða meira í myndunum. Þær eru ekki skreyti við texta, þær eru sjálft lesmálið.

Ég veit að það dugar ekki að segja þetta einu sinni, ekki tvisvar, ekki þrisvar. Ég mun því tyggja þetta enn og aftur, jafnt oft og nauðsyn krefur:
1) Myndabækurnar um skrímslin eru höfundarverk þriggja höfunda.
2) Við þrjú: Áslaug, Rakel og Kalle skrifum texta skrímslabókanna í sameiningu á þremur tungumálum. (Og já, það er hægt.)
3) Ég, Áslaug, er myndhöfundurinn, ég sé líka um myndrænu frásögnina, myndlýsi eða myndskreyti – og hanna auk þess útlit bókanna, brýt um textann.

Ég ætla fljótlega að segja nánar frá skrímslabókunum hér á þessum síðum, sem og kynna betur það sem meðhöfundar mínir eru að bralla. Þangað til má lesa sitthvað undir flipanum BÆKUR og með því að smella HÉR til að lesa síðustu fréttir af skrímslabókunum. ♦ Illustrations. An article in Fréttatíminn today made me wonder, once again, why illustrations in picture books are still considered a mere addition to a story, rather than the story itself. The whole concept of a picture book is the visual narrative – first and foremost, although it’s usually combined with text. Since the article in Fréttatíminn, as so many others, failed to count me in as a text-author of the Monsterseries (and as every illustrator can tell you: the text author is THE author, never mind the concept or the pictures) I will repeat this as long as necessary:
1) The picturebooks about the Little Monster and the Big Monster are created by three authors.
2) We are the three authors of the text: Áslaug Jónsdóttir, Kalle Güettler and Rakel Helmsdal.
3) There is one illustrator (author of pictures) and graphic designer: Áslaug Jónsdóttir.

I intend to add a page on the Monsterseries very soon, until then you can find information here on the BOOKS-page and also by scrolling through latest news on the monsterbooks here. Skrímslaerjur á sænsku | Monster Squabbles in Swedish

♦ Bókaútgáfa. Skrímslaerjur á sænsku, Monsterbråk, koma út í dag með braki og brestum. Forlagið Kabusa böcker gefur bókina út í Svíþjóð og tilkynnir að efnið sé: „färgstarkt, känslosamt, explosivt“ eins og lesa má hér á heimasíðu Kabusa og í fréttatilkynningu hér.

♦ Book release. The seventh book in the Monsterseries (Skrímslaerjur) is out in Swedish today. Monsterbråk is published by Kabusa Böcker in Göteborg and is introduced as „colorful, impassioned and explosive“. Press release in Swedish here.
