Sögustund á norsku | Story time in Norwegian

Sögustund á norsku: Sjö bækur um skrímslin tvö, litla og stóra skrímslið, hafa verið gefnar út hjá forlaginu Skald í norskri þýðingu Tove Bakke. Nýnorska menningarmiðstöðin fékk leyfi fyrir upplestri og myndbirtingu úr bókunum og fyrsti sögulestur hefur nú verið birtur á vef Nynorsk kultursenter.

Sígild skrímsli – ný prentun! | New reprints of two books from the Monster series

Útgáfufréttir! Skrímslabækurnar voru flestar uppseldar á síðasta ári en nú eru fjórar bækur fáanlegar eftir að fyrsta bókin: Nei! sagði litla skrímslið og sú nýjasta: Skrímsli í vanda, voru endurprentaðar. Fyrstu þrjár bækurnar hafa allar verið endurprentaðar en Skrímslapest, Skrímsli á toppnum, Skrímsli í heimsókn, Skrímslaerjur og Skrímslakisi eru uppseldar. Þær verða vonandi einnig endurútgefnar áður en langt um líður.

Nei! sagði litla skrímslið kom fyrst út árið 2004. Hún hlaut Dimmalimm – Íslensku myndskreytiverðlaunin og Bókaverðlaun bóksala sem besta íslenska barnabókin 2004. Skrímsli í vanda, kom fyrst út árið 2017. Hún hlaut Íslensku bókmenntaverðlaunin í flokki barna- og ungmennabóka og var tilnefnd til Barna- og unglingabókmenntaverðlauna Norðurlandaráðs.

Bækurnar um skrímslin hafa allar verið gefnar út í heimalöndum höfundanna: Íslandi, Færeyjum og Svíþjóð, en auk þess hafa sögurnar verið þýddar á fjölda tungumála: finnsku, norsku, dönsku, frönsku, spænsku, kínversku, litháísku, basknesku, katalónsku, kastilísku, galisísku, tékknesku, lettnesku og arabísku. Smellið hér til að sjá myndir úr bókunum og lesa brot úr bókadómum. 

Þó margar bækur séu uppseldar er hægt að panta heimsókn höfundar í skóla og leikskóla og þá eru sögurnar lesnar, myndir sýndar á skjá eða tjaldi og spjallað um bækur. Myndlistarvinnustofur henta einnig smærri hópum.

Monster news! New reprints of two books from the monster series are now in the stores. The first book Nei! sagði litla skrímslið (No! Said Little Monster) and the newest Skrímsli í vanda, (Monsters in Trouble) were long sold out, as well as most of the books from the series. The first three books have already been through the press more than once and twice and the five missing titles will hopefully soon be reprinted.

Nei! sagði litla skrímslið (No! Said Little Monster), first published in 2004, received Dimmalimm – The Icelandic Illustrators Award and The Bookseller’s Prize: Best Icelandic children’s book 2004. Skrímsli í vanda, (Monsters in Trouble), first published in 2017, received the Icelandic Literary Prize 2017 in the category of children and young adult’s fiction and was nominated to The Nordic Council Children and Young People’s Literature Prize.

Books from the monster series, written in Icelandic, Swedish and Faroese (more about the authorship here) have been translated to Finnish, Norwegian, Danish, French, Spanish, Chinese, Lithuanian, Basque, Catalan, Castilian, Galician, Czech, Latvian and Arabic. Skrímslin mæta í afmæli! | The Monsters at the Nordic House Library birthday celebration

Skrímslastund! Árið 1968 opnaði Norræna húsið í Vatnsmýri og ári síðar var hið undurfallega bókasafn hússins formlega opnað. Næstkomandi sunnudag, 11. ágúst 2019, verður haldið upp á 50 ára afmæli bókasafnsins með fjölskylduvænni dagskrá og veitingum. Klukkan 12:00-13:00 verður til dæmis sögustund í salnum á íslensku, dönsku, norsku, sænsku, finnsku og færeysku fyrir börn og fjölskyldur þeirra, en þá verður lesið úr Nei! sagði litla skrímslið á þessum tungumálum og myndir sýndar á stórum skjá.
Við skrímslin óskum Norræna húsinu og starfsfólki bókasafnsins hjartanlega til hamingju með 50 árin!

Monster event! In 1968 the Nordic house, designed by Alvar Aalto, was opened in Reykjavík. A year later it’s beautiful library was opened, now celebrating 50 years of service with a family-friendly program next Sunday, on 11 August from 12-17. There will be a story hour in the auditorium for children and their families at 12-13, where Nei! sagði litla skrímslið (No! Said Little Monster) will be read in Icelandic, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, and Faroese and the illustrations shown on a big screen. A big happy birthday to the Nordic house library!

Heimsókn til Lettlands | Visiting Latvia

Hjá góðum gestgjöfum: Í Norrænu bókasafnsvikunni 2018, sem var 12.-18. nóvember, átti ég því láni að fagna að vera boðin til Lettlands. Leiðin lá til Rīga, Sigulda og Júrmala en heimsóknin var í boði skrifstofu Norrænu ráðherranefndarinnar í Lettlandi og bókaútgáfunnar “Liels un mazs”, sem síðsumars gaf út fyrstu bókina um skrímslin: Nei! sagði litla skrímslið eða Briesmonītis teica Nē!. Hvarvetna var mér tekið með kostum og kynjum og ég naut leiðsagnar heimamanna um borgir og bæi. Lesendur hitti ég í skólum, leikskólum og bókasöfnum og var ævinlega leyst út með fallegum gjöfum, bókum og blómum. Hjartans þakkir fyrir móttökurnar! Paldies!

With marvelous hosts: In The Nordic Literary Week 2018, I had the honor of visiting Latvia for the first time. I did workshops and school visits that were planned by the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Latvia and the excellent publishing house Liels un mazs, who released the first book in the Monster series earlier this year, titled Briesmonītis teica Nē!. I went to Rīga, Sigulda and Jūrmala where I met young readers in schools, kindergartens and libraries. I was treated with such generosity by all my hosts, invited to guided tours of the townships, receiving lovely presents, books, flowers and good food. A truly warm welcome and wonderful reception everywhere! Paldies!

Skrímslavinnustofur: Hér fyrir neðan eru myndir frá vinnustofu barnanna í Domdaris-skólanum íRīga. Krakkarnir sköpuðu og fjölbreytt skrímsli og gátu unnið áfram með sköpunarverkin sem einfaldar leikbrúður.

S! fyrir Sigöldu! Í bókasafninu í Sigulda hitti ég fleiri hópa barna úr nálægum leikskólum og skólum og þar skorti heldur ekkert á sköpunargleðina. Að þeirri vinnu lokinni fengum við góða leiðsögn um Sigulda kastala og innlit á vinnustofur handverksfólks. Við svifum með kláfferju yfir dalinn og þó að það rigndi daginn langan var fegurð svæðisins augljós, hvar skógur þekur ása og áin Gauja liðast um dalbotninn.

S! for Sigulda! I experienced a very nice visit to Sigulda where I held workshops for children from kindergartens and schools. Afterwards I had the chance to see a bit of the sights: the ruins of medieval Sigulda Castle, a peek into designer’s and craftmen’s studios and a fun ride in the cable car across the valley, running from Sigulda to Krimulda, offering a perfect bird’s-eye-view over the woods and the valley and the Gauja river. Although it rained that day the beauty of the scenery and the charm of the area was unmissable.

Monster friends in Jūrmala. | Skrímslavinir í Jūrmalas Alternatīvā skola.

Júrmala: Skrímslavini hittum við líka í Jūrmalas Alternatīvā skola og í nýju og glæsilegu bókasafni bæjarins (sjá fleiri myndir hér á Fb). Bærinn Júrmala liggur á þröngu eiði milli Rīgaflóa og árinnar Lielupe. Um ár og aldir hafa langar hvítar sandstrendur laðað þangað sumarleyfisgesti og bæinn allan prýða gömul og glæsileg timburhús. Þar blómstrar menningin líka, til dæmis í reisulegu tónlistarhúsinu, Dzintari tónleikahöllinni. Heimsókn í myndlistaskólann, Jūrmalas Mākslas skola, var sömuleiðis áhugaverð og fjölbreytni og fagmennska í listkennslunni aðdáunarverð. Skólabyggingin myndar ásamt bókasafninu og tónlistarskólanum miðstöð listmenntunar barnanna í Júrmala, sem er til mikillar fyrirmyndar.

Jūrmala: We also met energetic groups of monster friends at Jūrmalas Alternatīvā skola, as well as in the splendid new city library there. (See more photos here on FB). Jūrmala lies only about half an hours drive from Rīga, on a narrow strip of land between the Gulf of Rīga and the river Lielupe. It’s a popular seaside resort in the summertime but the long white and sandy beaches are also perfect for a relaxing stroll in wintertime. Just as in Sigulda and in Rīga, every spot breathes with a long history of culture. We were invited for a tour in the Dzintari Concert Hall, and visited the art school, Jūrmalas Mākslas skola, that along with the library and the music school forms a center of art, culture and education of exceptionally high quality.

Bókaútgáfan: Vitanlega var heimsókn til útgefenda á dagskránni. Fyrsta bókin um litla skrímslið og stóra skrímslið, Nei! sagði litla skrímslið, kom út í sumar á lettneska hjá forlaginu Liels un mazs í Rīga, undir titlinum Briesmonītis teica Nē! Þýðandi er Dens Dimiņš. Útgáfa Lies un mazs er sérlega fáguð og metnaðarfull, svo eftir hefur verið tekið, en forlagið hefur hlotið ýmsar viðurkenningar og verið tilnefnt til alþjóðlegra verðlauna fyrir starfið. Meðal annars hlaut Liels un mazs tilnefningu á úrvalslista Bologna bókamessunnar sem „besti útgefandi barnabóka í Evrópu“. Frumútgáfur þeirra eru augnakonfekt og augljóslega er skýr listræn stefna sem ræður vali útgefenda. Sannarlega upplífgandi viðhorf að gæði frekar en væntingar um metsölu ráði för. Alīse Nigale útgefandi og hennar fólk tóku sérlega vel á móti gestinum! 

Ég verð líka að þakka skipuleggjendum og leiðsögumönnum mínum sérstaklega: Ieva Hermansone frá skrifstofu Norrænu ráðherranefndarinnar í Lettlandi og Sanita Muizniece, ritstjóra hjá Liels un mazs sem túlkaði fyrir mig og aðstoðaði í öllum vinnustofunum. Sanita er einnig ritstjóri hjá einni áhugaverðustu teiknimyndabókaútgáfu Evrópu og þó víðar væri leitað: kuš! komikss. Hér má lesa um útgáfuna.

Publishers: Visiting my brilliant Latvian publishers in Rīga, Liels un mazs, – was a thrill. Their original Latvian titles and projects are totally amazing. A fine artistic quality production. No wonder Liels un Mazs has received several recognitions for their work. Last year the publishing house was shortlisted for an award at the Bologna book fair as the “best children’s publisher of the year in Europe”. So I am very happy that the first book in the series about Little Monster and Big Monster, No! Said Little Monster, was published in Latvian by Liels un mazs earlier this year. Briesmonītis teica Nē! is translated by Dens Dimiņš.

I must mention the excellent organizers of my visit to Latvia: Ieva Hermansone from the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office and my patient interpreter and helper in all the workshops: Sanita Muizniece, who is an editor at Liels un mazs, and also a editor and publisher of the remarkable comic-book production: kuš! comics, – an awesome and inspiring publication. Dagur í Rīga: Borgin er bæði forn og fögur og eins og í fleiri borgum skapar vatn óviðjafnanlega stemningu og andrými. Rīga stendur við ósa fljótsins Daugava sem streymir lygnt til sjávar og endar þar sinn yfir 1000 km langan farveg. Að auki marka síkisskurðirnir, Pilsētas kanāls, elsta hluta borgarinnar. Ég hafði ekki mikinn tíma til að skoða borgina en eftir það stendur tvennt upp úr: matur og bókmenning. Fjórar byggingar mynda matarmiðstöðina Rīgas Centrāltirgus sem er dásamleg með öllu sínu ferskmeti: kjöti, fisk, mjólkurvörum, grænmeti og ávöxtum. Eins og aðrir Norður-Evrópubúar kunna Lettar þá list að salta, reykja, sulta og súrsa. Trönuber, sveppir, hunang, hnetur, epli og fleiri ávextir voru líka áberandi í haustuppskerunni. Þá var þjóðarbókhlaðan, Latvijas Nacionālā bibliotēka, ekki neitt augnagróm. Einfaldlega með glæsilegustu bókasöfnum heims. Þarna eru strax komnar tvær ástæður fyrir því að ég gæti hugsað mér að heimsækja Lettland aftur: matur og bækur …

A day in Rīga: I had a lovely day in Rīga although I didn’t manage to see but a tiny portion of the city’s attractions. But what I saw made me want to visit Rīga again – as well as other parts of Latvia! Just as in many other cities, water shapes the mood. The wide river Daugava creates a serene atmosphere in the midst of this bustling city. As do the city canals, Pilsētas kanāls, the old moat of historic Rīga.

I fell for two sites in particular: One was the enormous and absolutely delightful food market, Rīgas Centrāltirgus, situated in four large halls, loaded with fresh meat, fish, dairy products, vegetables and fruit. And like many other nations of Northern Europe, Latvians know the art of preserving food by salting, smoking, conserving, pickling and fermenting. And of course making use of their many sorts of fresh native produce: berries, mushrooms, honey, nuts and fruits.

Another favorite was The National Library of Latvia, Latvijas Nacionālā bibliotēka, – simply breathtaking. Not only a grand piece of architecture but also a well-functioning establishment, with interesting exhibitions (like the traveling exhibition “To Be Banned” Baltic Books 1918-1940) and of course book collections of all sorts.

And now, I have already two very good reasons to visit Latvia again: food and literature…

Skrímslin á rússnesku | Little Monster and Big Monster go to Russia!

Skrímslin til Rússlands: Þau tíðindi eru nú að kvisast út að litla og stóra skrímslið séu á leið til Rússlands. Það er útgáfufyrirtækið Meshcheryakov Publishing House, sem í nóvember tryggði sér réttinn á þremur bókum um litla skrímslið og stóra skrímslið: Nei! sagði litla skrímslið, Stór skrímsli gráta ekki og Skrímsli í myrkrinu. Fyrir nokkrum árum höfðu sömu útgefendur sýnt bókunum áhuga á Bologna bókastefnunni, en talsverð gleði virðist ríkja um samninginn við Forlagið og höfundana. Tíðindi á rússnesku má lesa hér og hér og á FBsíðu útgáfunnar hér.

Bækurnar um litla skrímslið og stóra skrímslið eftir Áslaugu Jónsdóttur, Rakel Helmsdal og Kalle Güettler eru nú orðnar níu talsins. There are now a total of nine picture books about the Little Monster and the Big Monster by the collaborative authorship of Áslaug Jónsdóttir, Rakel Helmsdal and Kalle Güettler. They have all been published in the authors’ home countries: Iceland, Faroe Islands and Sweden, but have furthermore been translated into Finnish, Norwegian and Neo-Norwegian, Danish, French, Spanish, Chinese, Lithuanian, Basque, Catalan, Castilian, Galician, Czech and Arabic, and titles now soon to be available in Latvian and Russian. See also illustrations from the books and quotes from reviews here. Read more about the series and the authors here. Skrímslabækurnar á Spáni | Book release in Spain

Tveir titlar í bókaflokknum um litla skrímslið og stóra skrímslið komu út á dögunum hjá Sushi Books á Spáni. Það eru Skrímsli í myrkrinu og Skrímslapest á tveimur tungumálum: spænsku (kastilísku) og galisísku. Sushi Books er barnbókaútgáfa forlagsins Rinoceronte sem hefur áður þýtt og gefið út fyrstu tvo titlana, Nei! sagði litla skrímslið og Stór skrímsli gráta ekki. Fyrstu tveir titlarnir komu út á fjórum tungumálum árið 2014: kastilísku, galisísku, katalónsku og basknesku. Book release: Sushi Books in Spain have just launched two new titles in the Monster series in Spanish (Castilian) and Galician. Sushi Books is an imprint of the publisher Rinoceronte that have previously published the first two books in the series, No! Said Little Monster and Big Monsters Don’t Cry in the Castilian, Galician, Catalan and Basque languages (2014), see below.

♦ Tvítyngi og upplestur: Móðurmál, félag um tvítyngi stóð fyrir upplestrum á Nei! sagði litla skrímslið, í Menningarhúsinu Gerðubergi 28. nóvember s.l. Þetta er í annað sinn sem félagið stendur fyrir upplestrum á bókinni á ýmsum tungumálum. Í þetta sinn var lesið á íslensku, lettnesku, tékknesku, litháísku, portúgölsku, slóvakísku, basknesku, kastillísku, ítölsku, norsku, katalónsku, pólsku og filippseysku. Bókin hefur ekki verið útgefin á öllum þessum tungumálum en margir lögðu hönd á plóg við að þýða textann á sitt móðurmál. Upplesarar voru til fyrirmyndar og lásu með tilþrifum. Kærar þakkir félagar í Móðurmáli!

♦ Bilingualism and book reading: I took these photos last Saturday at an event where No! Said Little Monster was read in numerous languages.This is the second time Móðurmál – Mother Tongue, Association on Bilingualism, arranges an event like this, now in Gerðuberg Culture House  where “No! Said Little Monster” was read in: Icelandic, Latvian, Czech, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Slovak, Basque, Castilian, Italian, Norwegian, Catalan, Polish and Filipino. ♦ Nei! Það voru stórkostleg og fjölhæf ungmenni sem lásu „Nei! sagði litla skrímslið“ á ýmsum tungumálum fyrir fjölda áheyrenda á Barnamenningarhátíð s.l. laugardag í Borgarbókasafninu, Grófarhúsi. Bókin um litla skrímslið á líka vel við í dag, fyrsta maí, því hún minnir okkur á að við þurfum við stundum að veita mótstöðu, segja NEI, hingað og ekki lengra, til þess einmitt að geta lifað saman í sátt.

♦ No! Last Saturday, at the Reykjavík Children’s Culture Festival 2015, Móðurmál / Mother Tongue, Association on Bilingualism arranged an event in the City Library – Culture House, where “No! Said Little Monster” was read in: Icelandic, English, Czech, Twi, Lithuanian, Latvian, Portuguese, Slovakian, Spanish, Turkish, Italian and Chinese! Talented young people, from age 6 and up read in their mother tongue and they were all amazing. Thank you for the wonderful day!

♦ Barnamenningarhátíð: Við skrímslin ætlum að taka þátt í Barnamenningarhátíð á laugardag, 25. apríl 2015, kl 15-16 í Borgarbókasafninu, Grófarhúsi. Þar verður upplestur á bókinni Nei, sagði litla skrímslið á mörgum tungumálum. Ég les á íslensku, en börn og unglingar frá móðurmálshópum samtakanna Móðurmál lesa á sínum móðurmálum. Íslenskur texti og myndir úr bókinni eru á skjánum svo viðstaddir geta fylgst með. Fjölmargir móðurmálshópar taka þátt. Litla skrímslið ætlar að hrópa NEI! á íslensku, tékknesku, twi, ítölsku, litháísku, lettnesku, portúgölsku, slóvakísku, tyrknesku – og kannski á fleiri tungumálum! Hér má kynna sér dagskrá Barnamenningarhátíðar.

♦ Reykjavík Childrens’s Culture Festival: I will be participating in Reykjavík Children’s Culture Festival 2015, on Saturday, when doing a reading of the book No! Said Little Monster. I will read from the book in Icelandic and children from Móðurmál, mother-tongue teaching program, read in their own language. Icelandic text and pictures are on a screen for guest to watch. So Little Monster will shout out in: Icelandic, Czech, Twi, Italian, Lithuanian, Latvian, Portuguese, Slovakian, Turkish and perhaps more! The event is arranged by Móðurmál / Mother Tongue, Association on Bilingualism and will take place in Borgarbókasafnið, City Library – Culture House Grófin, Tryggvagata 15, on Saturday April 25th at 3 pm – 4 pm. See also Reykjavík Children’s Culture Festival program for more events!

GoiIrakuragaienMunstro2015♦ Bókadómar: Stór skrímsli gráta ekki  marsera með á árlegum úrvalslista bókasafna í Navarra á Spáni „DESFILE DE ALTA LECTURA“ 2015. Þar fær bókin ljómandi umsögn á spænsku (kastilísku) og basknesku sem ef til vill mætti þýða svo: „Vinalegu skrímslin, sem eru sköpun þessara norrænu höfunda, leyfa sér að fjalla um tilfinningar og líðan án nokkurs ótta. ♦ Book review: Each year, a team of librarians from the public libraries of Navarra in Spain present a selection of outstanding titles with recommendations of books in different genres for readers of all ages. Parading along with other books in the catalog „DESFILE DE ALTA LECTURA“ 2015 is Big Monsters Don’t Cry, – in Basque: Munstro handiek ez dute negarrik egiten. The catalog is available here. ♦ Þýðingar. Fyrstu bækurnar um skrímslin komu út á spænsku fyrir nokkrum árum hjá spænska Random House undir merkinu Beascoa. Útgefandi okkar þar yfirgaf forlagið skömmu síðar og í framhaldinu voru bækurnar í hálfgerðu munaðarleysi á Spáni og S-Ameríku, sem samningurinn tók einnig yfir. Nú hefur nýtt forlag, Sushi Books keypt útgáfuréttinn. Sushi Books er barnbókaútgáfa forlagsins Rinoceronte og gefur út bækur á fjórum helstu tungumálum spánverja. Fyrstu tvær sögurnar um skrímslin verða því brátt fáanlegar á spænsku (kastilísku), galisísku, katalónsku og basknesku. Í síðustu tveimur tölublöðum af Bookbird: a Journal of International Children’s Literature er að finna dóma um spænsku þýðingarnar af bókunum Nei! sagði litla skrímslið og Stór skrímsli gráta ekki. Í tímaritinu hefur áður birst bókadómur um skrímslin tvö og var þá Skrímsli á toppnum til umfjöllunar. Dómarnir um skrímslabækurnar þrjár eru á ensku og má lesa hér neðar á síðunni.

Big Monsters Don’t Cry

“Los monstruos grandes no lloran goes to the heart of childhood insecurities in competition with friends. The pressure felt by the character of the big monster, who feels inadequate whenever he plays with his friend the little monster, is the dual burden of being unable to measure up to his friend’s abilities coupled with the conviction that he must not reveal his feelings of inadequacy. When he is brought to the breaking point by the little monster’s laughter at the actions of his father, he finds out that his tears are an opening to discussing his real feelings with his friend. Not only does this prompt a deepening of the friendship, but also an opportunity for the little monster to share some of the things he admires about the big monster, and a chance for the big monster to teach skills he possesses.
