Skrímslin í útlöndum | Monster news

Nei! í Eistlandi 

Bókaútgáfan NORÐUR er eistneskt forlag sem stofnað var árið 2023 og hefur það að markmiði að gefa út norrænar barna- og unglingabókmenntir. Fyrsta bókin um skrímslin, Nei! sagði litla skrímslið, kom út á dögunum hjá forlaginu NORÐUR undir titlinum Ei! ütles väike koll. Þýðandi er Kadri Sikk.

Við höfundarnir erum stoltir yfir því að skrímslin okkar bæti við sig nítjánda tungumálinu og vonum að fleiri bækur í bókaflokknum eigi erindi til eistneskra barna. 

Ei! in Estonia 

NORÐUR publishing is a small publishing house established in 2023 with the aim of publishing Nordic children’s and young adult literature. The first book in the Monster series, No! said the little monster, was recently published by NORÐUR by the title Ei! ütles väike koll, translated by Kadri Sikk.

We are proud that our monsters are now adding the nineteenth language to the collection and hope that with time more books in the series will reach Estonian children. 

Kvik skrímsli í Japan 

Bókaútgáfan Yugi Shobou í Tokyo hefur gefið út þrjár bækur í bókaflokknum um skrímslin. Útgefendur hafa verið einstaklega iðnir við að kynna bækurnar með sýningum, vinnustofum og uppákomum. Hreyfimynd var gerð eftir myndlýsingunum í Skrímsli í myrkrinu og hún notuð við fjölmenna upplestra. Hér má lesa kynningu á vef Tama-borgar en þar hafa m.a. farið fram sýningar á hreyfimyndinni.

Animations in Japan 

The Tokyo-based publishing house Yugi Shobou has published three books in the Monsters series. The publishers have been doing a great work promoting the books with exhibitions, workshops and events. An animated film was made based on the illustrations in Monsters in the Dark and used for public readings. The titles published in Japanese are Monster Flu, かいぶつかぜ, Monsters in the Dark, まっくらやみのかいぶつ, and Big Monsters Don’t Cry, おおきいかいぶつは なかないぞ. All translated by Shohei Akakura. See more at the publishers website and Instagram.

Brúðuleikur í Noregi 

Í Noregi heldur leikkonan Adele Duus áfram að flytja brúðuleikverkið sem hún samdi upp úr bókinni Skrímsli í heimsókn. Verkið er farandleikhúsverk og útileikhús sem Adele frumsýndi í febrúar 2022. Monsterbesøk nýtur enn mikilla vinsælda og er eitt af verkunum á leikárinu hjá Lys levende Adele. 

Puppets in Norway 

In Norway, actress Adele Duus continues to perform the puppet play she created from our book Skrímsli í heimsókn or Monsters Visit and premiered in February 2022. It is a traveling theater, mostly performed outdoors, by this energetic one-woman-theater, Lys levende Adele. The piece Monsterbesøk is still very popular and will continue to be available for Norwegian children in 2025.

Endurprentanir í Svíþjóð 

Í Svíþjóð hafa síðustu tveir titlarnir í skrímslabókaflokknum verið í góðum höndum hjá bókaforlaginu Argasso. Fyrirtæki Kalle Güettler tók hins vegar við eldri titlum og hafa þær bækur verið endurútgefnar undir merkjum „Kalle Skrivare“. Eftirspurnin hefur verið með ágætum og á síðasta ári voru endurútgefnir tveir titlar: Nej! sa lilla monster og Stora monster gråter inte. Um prentun sér Författares Bokmaskin og í ár fengu skrímslin heiðursess í dagatali prentmiðlunarinnar 2025.

More monsters in Sweden 

In Sweden, the last two titles in the Monster book series have been in good hands with Argasso publishing house. My co-author Kalle Güettler‘s company took over the older titles and those previous titles have been republished under the lable of “Kalle Skrivare”. Demand has been excellent and last year two titles were reissued: Nej! sa lilla monster and Stora monster gråter inte. The printing is arranged and done by Författares Bokmaskin (the Writer’s Press) and this year the monsters were honored by being selected for the press’s calendar 2025.

The book series about Big Monster, Little Monster and Furry monster is published by Forlagið, see further information about the new book here and in English here. The latest book, Monster Party, is available in four languages already: published in Swedish by Argasso and in Danish by Vild Maskine. The Faroese version is expected this spring at Bókadeildinni publishing. Skrímslin í Danmörku – beint í mark! | The Monster series in Denmark

Bókadómur og útgáfa: Bókaútgáfan Vild Maskine tók við útgáfu skrímslaseríunnar af Torgaard-útgáfunni og hefur nú útgefið eða endurútgefið allar bækurnar í bókaflokknum. Í ár komu út þrjár bækur: endurútgáfur af Monsterbesøg og Monsterklammeri og svo nýjasta bókin: Monsterfest. Það er búið að gefa út dóm dönsku bókasafnsþjónustunnar, DBC, um Monsterfest, sem fær góða góma þar eins og víðar. Marion Tirsgaard segir bókina vera „algjört möst“ á bókasafninu og segir svo eitthvað á þessa lund: 

„Enn eitt skotið sem hittir beint í mark í þessari heillandi bókaröð um litla skrímslið, stóra skrímslið og loðna skrímslið, sem í hér fara í gegnum allar tilfinningar frá eftirvæntingu til vonbrigða og gleði. Einfaldur söguþráðurinn er borinn uppi af skondnum og köntuðum myndlýsingum, sem þrátt fyrir grófar línur eru fullar af tjáningu og persónuleika. Maður verður aldrei fyrir vonbrigðum með litla skrímslið og stóra skrímslið, og þessi bók er engin undantekning.“

Book review and release: The publishing house Vild Maskine took over the publishing of the monster series from Torgaard Publishing and it has now published or republished all the books in the book series. This year, three books were published: reprints of Monsterbesøg and Monsterklammeri and then the latest book: Monsterfest (Skrímslaveisla / Monster Party). Editors at the Danish Library Central (DBC) have published a review of Monsterfest, – yet another important book review for authors and publishers. Editor Marion Tirsgaard says the book is “a must” in the library and then says something along the lines of:

“Another hit in the charming series about Little Monster, Big Monster and Furry Monster, which in this book goes through all the emotions from anticipation to disappointment and joy. The simple plot is lifted by the crooked and angular illustrations, which, despite the rough lines, are full of expression and personality. You can never go wrong with Big Monster and Little Monster, and this book is absolutely no exception.”

Skrímslaveisla: umsögn í Svíþjóð | Review in Sweden

Bókadómur: Skrímslaveisla kom út í Svíþjóð í nóvember hjá Argasso. Dómar sænsku bókasafnsþjónustunnar, BTJ, eru mikilvægir fyrir höfunda og útgefendur en Skrímslaveisla fékk góða umsögn eins og fyrri bækur. Svo segir um Monsterfest, – í lauslegri þýðingu: 

„Textinn er hluti af myndunum á spennandi og tjáningarríkan hátt þar sem hann miðlar líka tilfinningum á myndrænan máta og form bókarinnar er notað til að undirstrika fjölbreytta uppsetninguna. Þrátt fyrir að þrír aðilar komi að gerð þessara myndabóka myndar sagan órjúfanlega samfellu þar sem hver hluti er vandlega ígrundaður og fellur inn í heildina á þaulhugsaðan hátt. Sögur þessara tveggja skrímslavina eru orðnar uppáhaldslestur margra barna og ánægjulegt að það komi út enn ein jafn vönduð bók og hinar fyrri.“

Book review: Skrímslaveisla (Monster Party) was released in Sweden in November, by the title Monsterfest. Book reviews published by the Swedish Library Center, BTJ, are important for authors and publishers, and Monsterfest got a fine review, like the previous books in the series: 

“The text becomes part of the images in an exciting and expressive way as it also graphically conveys emotional expressions and the book’s slim format is also used to reinforce the varied layout. Despite the fact that there are three people involved in the creation of these picture books, the story forms an integrated unity, where each part is well considered and fits into the whole in a carefully planned and skilful way. The stories of these two monster friends have become the favorite reading of many children and it is gratifying that here there is still another book of the same high quality as the previous ones.”

Skrímslaveislan er klassík! | Five star review!

Bókadómur: Skrímslaveisla fékk þennan fína fimm-stjörnu bókadóm í nýjasta bókablaði Heimildarinnar. Þar skrifar Páll Baldvin Baldvinsson um bækur en hann kunni sannarlega að meta veisluna: „Enginn er svikinn af þessari bókaröð.“ „Framúrskarandi framhald á vönduðu efni.“  Það hefur oft verið fagnað af minna tilefni en fimm stjörnum og skrímslin fá sér því í það minnsta væna kökusneið af tilefninu. 

Útgefandi bókaflokksins um skrímslin er Forlagið. Skrímslaveisla kemur einnig út á sænsku í næstu viku hjá Argasso forlaginu, á færeysku hjá Bókadeildinni í Torshavn í janúar og hún er einnig væntanleg hvað úr hverju á dönsku hjá Vild Maskine. 

Book review: The new book in the Monsterseries, Monster Party (Skrímslaveisla), received this fine five-star book review in the latest issue of Heimildin news media. The well versed reviewer Páll Baldvin Baldvinsson proclaims the Monster book series “a classic” and the new book “An excellent sequel of a quality material.” And he adds: “No one will be disappointed by this book series.”  The five stars are a good addition to the party decorations and make a good reason to celebrate and get it a nice slice of cake!

Umfjöllun – til minnis: | Book review

Bókadómur: Ég rakst nýverið á umfjöllun um „til minnis:“ á þeim ágæta bókmenntavef: Skáld.is, en þar skrifa konur um konur sem skrifa. Ritdómurinn hafði farið fram hjá mér þegar hann birtist síðasta haust. Magnea Þuríður Ingvarsdóttir skrifar grein sem ber titilinn: Er náttúran mín eða þín? Hún heldur í ferðalag inn í ljóðin og segist þar finna: „Endalaust fagrar hendingar og litlar myndir af náttúrunni“. Umfjöllunina má finna hér á skald.is.

Book Review: I recently came across a review of my book of poetry: til minnis: on the excellent literature website: Skáld.is, where women write about women who write. I had missed the review when it was published last fall. Magnea Þuríður Ingvarsdóttir writes an article entitled: Is the nature mine or yours? She describes how the reader goes on a journey into the poetry and says she finds there: “Endless beautiful lines and images of nature”. The review can be found here at skald.is.

Bókadómur: Í byrjun júnímánaðar birtist í Morgunblaðinu prýðilegasti bókadómur eftir Einar Fal Ingólfsson um ljóðabókina til minnis:. Í fjölmiðlaeklunni er gleðiefni að fá góða umfjöllun og jákvæða umsögn! 

Book Review: At the beginning of June, the Morgunblaðið newspaper published a splendid book review about my book of poetry: til minnis: (The title could be translated as “memo:”or “to do:”or perhaps “don’t forget:”).The review was written by Einar Falur Ingólfsson, an acclaimed photographer and artist, and who did not seem to mind that I had slipped some black-and-white photos into the book. Einar Falur says: “One of the main characteristics of the poems is the purposeful use of imagery and not least personification, which often works out beautifully and purposefully.”

Sjáðu! – umfjöllun | Review

Bókadómur: Á vefsíðunni Lestrarklefinn er öflug umfjöllun um bókmenntir og leiklist og það er ekki ónýtt þegar dagblöðin virðast ekki ráða við að halda uppi gagnrýni og umræðu.

Í Lestrarklefanum birtist á sínum tíma lofsamlegur bókadómur um Sjáðu! – á útgáfuári bókarinnar, eftir Katrínu Lilju Jónsdóttur, en nú í vor kom þessi fína umsögn frá Díönu Sjöfn Jóhannsdóttur þar sem mælt er með bókum fyrir ung börn og foreldra þeirra, þar á meðal Sjáðu!

„Sjáðu eftir Áslaugu Jónsdóttur er líklega ein af betri barnabókum sem ég hef lesið. […] Myndskreytingarnar í þessari bók eru yndislegar, það er margt um að vera á blaðsíðunum en ekki þannig að það sé yfirþyrmandi. En mér finnst oft verða mikill glundroði í mörgum ungbarnabókum, eitthvað sem ég er lítt hrifin af. En hérna tekst Áslaugu mjög vel til að hafa jafnvægi á síðunum og í sögunni. Tvö börn kanna heiminn í kringum sig og sjá hina ýmsu hluti á leið sinni. Það er ótrúlega skemmtilegt að benda á ýmsar kynjaverur og tala um þær eða biðja barnið um að finna hluti á blaðsíðunum. Ég er glöð að lesa að ég hafi hitt í mark með því að forðast ofhlæði og óreiðu, en ég leitaðist við að blanda saman bæði einföldum formum og flóknari smáatriðum sem gætu höfðað til barna á mismunandi aldri. Eitthvað sem gæti til dæmis hentað í lestri fyrir systkini og svo auðvitað vildi ég að bókin gæti „vaxið með barninu“.

Book review: The website Lestrarklefinn publishes reviews on literature and plays and when my book Sjáðu! came out it received a praising review by Katrín Lilja Jónsdóttir. Some weeks ago this nice review by Díana Sjöfn Jóhannsdóttir was published. She recommended books for young children and their parents, amongst them Sjáðu!

“Sjáðu! (LOOK!) by Áslaug Jónsdóttir is probably one of the best children’s books I have read. […] The illustrations are wonderful, there is a lot going on on the pages but nowhere overwhelming. I often find that there is too much of a chaos in many infant books, something I do not like. But here Áslaug succeeds very well in balancing the pages and the story. Two children explore the world around them and see all sorts of things on their way. It is fun to point out various odd creatures and animals and talk about them or ask the child to find things and objects on the pages. The rhymed text is also entertaining. This is a book that can clearly grow with the child.” – Díana Sjöfn, Lestrarklefinn, 2022.

I am glad to read that I have managed to avoid overload and clutter, but I tried to mix both simple shapes and more complicated details that might appeal to children of different ages. Something that could for example be enjoyable for reading to siblings, – and then of course I wished the book could “grow with the child”.

Umfjöllun: Bókmenntavefurinn birti nú í desember umfjöllun um þrjár nýjar myndabækur, ætluðum ungum lesendum. Þar er meðal annars fjallað um Sjáðu!.

Um textann segir: „Hann er stuttur en hnitmiðaður og er bæði hljómfagur og áhugaverður. Bókadómur – Norrtelje Tidning: Sænska útgáfan af Skrímsli í vanda, Monster i knipa, kom út hjá bókaútgáfunni Opal í lok janúar og nú eru fyrstu dómarnir að birtast á vefmiðlum þar í landi. Margaretha Levin Blekastad skrifar afar jákvæðan ritdóm í Norrtelje Tidning: ‘Prisbelönta Monster i knipa: “En berättelse med ett stort, varmt hjärta”‘ og segir þar meðal annars eitthvað á þessa lund, í grófri þýðingu:

Book review – Norrtelje Tidning: The Swedish version of Monsters in Trouble, Monster i knipa, was released in the end of January, published Opal Publishing House. Now we are receiving the first reviews in Sweden. Bókadómur: Á Þorláksmessu, 23. desember, birtist bókadómur um Skrímsli í vanda í Morgunblaðinu. Silja Björk Huldudóttir útdeildi fjórum stjörnum og sagði meðal annars:
„Sem fyrr bera stílhreinar, litsterkar og tjáningarríkar myndir Áslaugar söguna áfram og sumt það mikilvægasta er ekki sagt berum orðum, sem er snjallt.
…
Margir deila vafalítið þörf skrímslanna til að láta gott af sér leiða og komast, líkt og skrímslin, að því að ef allir leggja sitt lóð á vogarskálarnar er ekkert óyfirstíganlegt. Með samkenndina að leiðarljósi verður heimurinn að betri stað og það eru mikilvæg skilaboð til ungra lesenda.“

Book review: On 23. December there was a fine book review in Morgunblaðið newspaper for Skrímsli í vanda – Monsters in trouble. Critic Silja Björk Huldudóttir decorated the review with four stars and wrote:

“As before, the story is carried on by Áslaug’s colorful, clear-cut style and expressive illustrations, and some of the most important things are not written out plainly, which is clever.
…
There is no doubt that many share the two monster’s need to do good and find, like the monsters, that if everyone pulls their weight, nothing is unachievable. Guided by sympathy and solidarity, the world becomes a better place and that is an important message for young readers.”

Þar segir Marie Eriksson m.a.: „Söguþráður bókarinnar er afar skýr, en innihald bókarinnar vex að mikilvægi og merkingu við hvern lestur og í samtali við börnin.“

Í síðustu viku birtist umfjöllun í dagblaðinu Information um bækurnar sem tilnefndar voru til Barna- og unglingabókmenntaverðlauna Norðurlandaráðs 2013. Í grein sinni: „Nordisk børnelitteratur befrier sig af krop og form“ skrifar Anita Brask Rasmussen m.a. um vináttuna sem bæti einstaklinginn og um það fjalli líka Skrímslaerjur. Ennfremur segir hún:

„… Monsterskænderi er i sandhed en billedbog. Illustrationerne råber ofte højere end teksten, som er minimal. Monstrene har små skyer over hovederne, og vejret bliver dårligere og dårligere, efterhånden som de bliver uvenner. Vejret bliver sjælens spejl, og monstre kan som bekendt have meget mørke sjæle.“

♦ Book review. Last week the Danish newspaper Information reviewed all the books nominated toThe Nordic Council Children’s and Young People’s Literature Prize 2013. In the article: “Nordisk børnelitteratur befrier sig af krop og form“, Anita Brask Rasmussen writes about Skrímslaerjur’s (Monster Row)  theme of friendship, the symbolic clouds and stormy weather. ♦ Bókaútgáfa. Sagan af bláa hnettinum eftir Andra Snæ Magnason heldur áfram að gera víðreist. Nú er hvað úr hverju von á bresku útgáfunni hjá Pushkin Press í London. Ég fékk eintakið mitt með póstinum í síðustu viku (til hægri). Bandaríska útgáfan (til vinstri) kom út í lok síðasta árs hjá  Seven Stories Press og hefur fengið fína dóma og viðurkenningar. Báðar þessar útgáfur eru í öðru broti en íslenska frumútgáfan og dökki geimurinn á kápunni fékk að fjúka. Kápu- og bókarhönnun var í höndum erlendu útgefendanna.

♦ Bókadómur. School Library Journal birti á dögunum bókadóm um Söguna af bláa hnettinum og hann má lesa hér fyrir neðan. Þar segir m.a.: „Well-paced, with some wonderful, story-enhancing color illustrations.“

♦ Book release. The UK-version of The Story of the Blue Planet by Andri Snær Magnason is soon to be released by Pushkin Press in London. I got my copy in the mail last week. The US-version (left) was published several months ago by Seven Stories Press and has received excellent reviews and honors. The two English versions have the original illustrations, but differ quite a bit from the original edition in layout. Cover and book design was made by the publishing houses.

♦ Book review. School Library Journal has published a review on The Story of the Blue Planet, stating: “Well-paced, with some wonderful, story-enhancing color illustrations.”

“Those who enjoyed Adam Gidwitz’s A Tale Dark and Grimm (Dutton, 2010) may find Magnason’s cautionary ecological tale a perfect compliment. Like Gidwitz, Magnason does not shy away from graphic descriptions of danger and death. That being said, as in all good fables, he begins with once upon a time and readers learn of an innocuous-looking blue planet floating in space. It is inhabited solely by children, who live an idyllic, although somewhat savage life (they hunt for food, even clubbing seals). They are happy and this is most fully realized once a year when the butterflies of the Blue Mountains follow the sun across the sky, a beautiful and breathtaking sight. But as in all good tales and life itself, things are never static. Enter the villain, Mr. Goodday, who lands on the planet and is discovered by the protagonists, Brimir and Hulda. Mr. Goodday, over the course of a very short time, corrupts the children by giving them the power to fly and by introducing them to, among other things, the concept of sefishness. In the process the planet is corrupted as well, affecting the entire ecosystem. After a number of harrowing events, Mr. Goodday is outsmarted by Hulda, who offers to fulfill his greatest wish in return for restoring the children and planet to their former states. ♦ Bókadómur. Fínasti dómur um Skrímslapest birtist í Litteraturavisen Bokstaver um helgina. Monsterpest fær sexu á teningnum hjá Siri Pedersen sem segir m.a.:

teningur6„Trioen Kalle Güettler, Rakel Helmsdal og Áslaug Jónsdóttir har skapt morsomme figurer og satt dem inn i en gjenkjennelig ramme. Hvem blir vel ikke ekstra syk av å være syk, i alle fall når man blir tilgodesett med en dose omsorg? Hvem føler seg vel ikke syk selv, når man pleier syke?

Teksten sitter bra, illustrasjonene sitter enda bedre. Alt i alt blir Monsterpest monstrøst god lesing, både for liten og stor.“
