Dagur íslenskrar náttúru 2024 | Icelandic Nature Day 2024

Náttúran: Íslensk náttúra er margslungin og fjölbreytt. Við alla nánari skoðun er hún auðugri og aðdáunarverðari en flesta grunar við fyrstu sýn. Á hrjóstrugu og eyðilegu holti má finna fleiri blómtegundir, grös, mosa og skófir en á grænni grundum. Á opnum svæðum eins og heiðum og holtum verpa fjölmargar fuglategundir í merkilegu samlífi. Þarna þykir mörgum kjörið að sá lúpínu, grænþvo samvisku sína með skógrækt, reisa vindmyllugarða eða stunda viðlíka gróðabrall með vind, vatn og jarðefni. Allsstaðar er sótt að náttúrunni með byggingum, virkjunum, námugreftri og stóriðjubúskap á láði og legi og andvaraleysið með ólíkindum. Náttúruvernd er ekki gæluverkefni náttúruunnenda heldur forsenda lífs á jörðunni. Til hamingju með daginn.

Nature: Icelandic nature is complex and diverse. On closer inspection, it is richer and more admirable than most people suspect at first glance. On barren and desolate ground you can find more types of plants, flowers, grasses and mosses than on greener grounds. In open areas such as heaths and hollows, numerous bird species nest in a remarkable symbiosis. There, many people find it ideal to sow lupine, sell grounds for planting trees for greenwash, build wind turbine farms or engage in similar profiteering with water and mining. Everywhere, nature is under attack for buildings, power plants, mining and large-scale industrial agriculture and fish farming, and the lack of awareness is unbelievable. Nature conservation is not a hobby for nature lovers, but a prerequisite for life on earth. Happy Icelandic Nature Day – every day.

Sólin: Klukkan hálf sex að morgni, þegar bjartast er og best, hefur sólin risið við Hafnarfjall og krýnir Blákoll / Ölver 8. júlí 2024 kl 5:25.

The sun: At half past six in the morning, when it is brightest and best, the sun has risen above the mountains and crowns Mt Blákollur / Ölver on July 8, 2024 at 5:25 am.

Blómin: Uppáhaldsjurtirnar blómstra! Bláliljan sem fegrar við fjöruborðið, ilmbestu jurtir Íslands fylla vitin af svimandi góðum angan: blóðberg, gulmaðra og hvítsmári. Í vendinum (neðst) er m.a. kúmenblóm, blóðkollur, mjaðurt og blágresi, – það síðastnefnda uppáhaldsblóm mömmu sem hefði orðið 88 ára í dag, 12. júlí. Hugsa til hennar á þessum degi og sakna oft.

The flowers: All my favorite plants are blooming! The oyster leaf (Mertensia maritima) that beautifies the shore; and Iceland’s most fragrant herbs fill the air with a dizzyingly good aroma: wild thyme (Thymus praecox), lady’s bedstraw (Galium verum) and white clover (Trifolium repens).
And last, a bouquet of wild flowers (bottom photo), like caraway (Carum carvi), great burnet (Sanguisorba officinalis), meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) and woodland geranium (Geranium sylvaticum). The last one my mother’s favorite flower. She would have turned 88 today, July 12th, I miss her.

Bókverk og listarit | Book art and magazines

RABF 2024: Af og til tek ég þátt í verkefnum Bókverkafélagsins ARKA. Við settum verk okkar á boðstóla á Reykjavík Art Book Fair sem var haldinn í þriðja sinn dagana 23.-26. maí 2024 í Listasafni Reykjavíkur, Hafnarhúsi. Við ARKIR höfum m.a. sett saman þematengd smábókasöfn í 20 árituðum eintökum, en þema safnsins nú var „hringir“. Heftið sem ég lagði til í safnið hafði titilinn „hringir (á hvern fingur)“ – og inniheldur ljósmyndir og örstutta texta um 10 fingurgull.

PIST PROTTA 95: Nýverið fékk ég svo í hendur 95. tölublað danska listaritsins PIST PROTTA. Mér hlotnaðist sú ánægja að leggja til tvær ljósmyndir í ritið í þetta sinn. Ljósmyndirnar eru myndskot af þeirri hremmingu og furðusýn sem blasti við út um stofuglugga þegar brast á með eldgosum við Grindavík í vetur. Myndirnar eru grófar og jafnvel óskýrar, teknar án undirbúnings og umhugsunar, ekki ósvipað hugarástandinu sem fylgir uppákomum af þessu tagi þegar skýjaður vetrarhimininn byrjar að loga.

PIST PROTTA er eitt elsta listatímarit Danmerkur og hóf göngu sína 1981. Ritið hefur alla tíð verið áberandi fjölbreytt og tilraunakennt að bæði efni og formi og fjöldi listamanna tekið þátt í að skapa efni ritsins. Ritstjórar hafa frá upphafi verið Jesper Fabricius, Jesper Rasmussen og Åse Eg Jørgensen. Hér má kynna sér ritið hjá útgefendum: PIST PROTTA. RABF 2024: From time to time I take part in the projects of my Book Art Group ARKIR. In May we participated in Reykjavík Art Book Fair, which was held for the third time, on May 23-26, 2024, in Reykjavík Art Museum, Hafnarhús. Among other things, we have as a group made some collective works: thematic mini-libraries or folders of small books and booklets, in 20 signed copies. The theme of this years collection was “rings”. The booklet I contributed to the collection was entitled “rings for every finger“, and contains photographs and very short texts about 10 rings in my posession.

PIST PROTTA 95: Recently I received a new issue of the Danish art magazine PIST PROTTA. I had the pleasure of contributing two photographs to the publication this time. The photographs illustrate the catastrophic wonders that I could view from my living room window couple of times last winter and that I shared momently: images from the volcanic eruptions at Grindavík. The images are rough and even blurry, not unlike the state of mind you are in at such events, when the cloudy winter sky is set on fire.

Pist Protta is one of Denmark’s oldest art magazines and was launched in 1981. The publication has always been distinctly diverse and experimental in both content and form, and a great number of artists have participated in creating the content through the years. From the beginning, the editors have been Jesper Fabricius, Jesper Rasmussen and Åse Eg Jørgensen. You can view the publications at the publishers site here: PIST PROTTA. Föstudagsmyndir: Júnímánuður getur verið kaldur og fullur af allskonar ólíkindum. En ef skýin fylla háloftin ekki alveg er birtan í júní mögnuð. Kvöldin löng og nætur bjartar. Myndirnar voru teknar á þessum degi, 28. júní fyrir annarsvegar 20 árum og 17 árum. (Kannski verður þessi póstur uppfærður ef veður leyfa…)

Maður og stígur | Man and Path

Ljóð: Sólin sem sefur er fjórða bókin í ritröðinni „Nordens Allerbedste Pensumløse Poesi“ (NAPP), sem þýða mætti: „Bestu ljóð Norðurlanda utan skuldunámskrár“. Í Danmörku, Svíþjóð, Noregi og á Íslandi hafa ritstjórnir ungra ljóðavina lesið allar ljóðabækur sem hafa komið út á tilteknu almanaksári og valið þau ljóð sem þeim þóttu best og snertu þau dýpst. Þetta hefur skilað sér í árlegu safnriti með ljóðum frá öllum Norðurlöndunum. Ljóðin eru birt á frummálinu, ásamt enskri þýðingu. Ljóðasöfn NAPP eru gefin út í nánu samstarfi við Poesiens Hus í Danmörku, en Sólin sem sefur  kom út í apríl 2024. Nánar má lesa um verkefnið hér á síðunni Ordskælv.dk

Poetry: The Sun Sleeping is the fourth book in the series Nordens Allerbedste Pensumløse Poesi – NAPP.  In Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Iceland, boards of young editors have read all the collections of poetry that have been published in a given year and have chosen their favorite poems, chosen for an annual collection of poems from all the Nordic countries. The poems are published in their original language, with English translations. The NAPP collection of poetry is published in close collaboration with Poesiens Hus in Denmark, and the book The Sun Sleeping was published in April 2024. For more information see Ordskælv.dk

Skrímsli klippt og skorin | Clear-cut monsters!

Skrímsli í bígerð: Fyrr í mánuðinum sendi ég nýjar myndlýsingar í skönnun, afrakstur vinnu undanfarinna mánuða. Ný bók um vinina þrjá: litla skrímslið, stóra skrímslið og loðna skrímslið kemur út í haust, ef allt gengur að óskum.

Aðferðin við myndlýsingarnar er hin sama og fyrr: ég skissa og teikna, klippi og raða, lita og lími. Ég hef oft reytt hár mitt (sem kann að útskýra hárafarið) yfir aðferðinni sem ég valdi fyrstu bókinni. Það gengur ekki að skipta algerlega um aðferð þó það megi auðvitað sjá einhverja þróun í myndsmíðinni frá því fyrir meira en 20 árum. En með límklístraða fingur hugsa ég mér stundum þegjandi þörfina og velti fyrir mér hversu margar þúsundir bita ég hafi klippt og klístrað í þágu skrímslanna. Kannski væri líka gaman að telja tennur, málaðar með pensli no. 1 eða 2 … Og af hverju ekki klippa þetta bara allt saman í tölvu? Það hef ég hugleitt líka og stundum notað þá aðferð í öðru samhengi. En þegar allt kemur til alls, er bara eitthvað ómótstæðilegt og fullnægjandi við það að vinna með höndunum: handleika verkfæri, liti, pappír. Raða, fella saman. Mistökin fylgja með, það handgerða skín einhvern veginn í gegn, þó myndvinnsla og prentun skapi síðan prentgripinn.

Gervigreindin á ugglaust eftir að gera betur. En hún verður aldrei annað en gervi. 

Monsters underway: A new book in the Monsterseries is in the making. Earlier this month I sent my illustrations for scanning, as a result of my work of the past months. A new book about the three friends: Little Monster, Big Monster and Furry Monster will hopefully be published this fall.

The technique I use is the same as before: I sketch and draw, cut and collage, color and glue. I’ve often torn my hair out (I know, doesn’t look good) because of this method I chose for the first book. It impossible to change the method now (at least after so many books in the series), although you can of course see some development in the image making since more than 20 years ago. But with sticky and glued fingers, I sometimes wonder how many thousands of pieces I have cut and pasted to make monsters. Maybe it would also be fun to count teeth, painted with brush no. 1 or 2… And why not just draw digitally and put it all together on the computer? I have thought about that too and sometimes use that method in other contexts. But after all, there’s just something irresistible and fulfilling about working with your hands: handling tools, colors, paper. Arranging, combining. Mistakes are included, the handmade is always present to some extent, although image processing and printing then create a printed and processed result.

The artificial intelligence will surely eventually do better. But it will never be anything but artificial.

Sumarsólstöður og vorið langa | Summer solstice and the long spring

Föstudagsmyndin: Hver er staðan? Það eru víst allir inni að horfa á fótbolta. En ekkert hefur meiri áhrif á líf okkar en staða hnattarins bláa í sólkerfinu. Í gær voru sumarsólstöður (vegna hlaupárs 20. júní en öllu jafna 21. júní) og birtan á Íslandi er í hámarki. Myrkur er ekkert: í dag reis sól í Reykjavík skömmu fyrir kl þrjú að nóttu og hún sest ekki fyrr en eftir miðnætti. Það dimmir sem sagt í tæpa þrjá tíma. Það er auðvelt að hugsa sér að lífið væri ljúfara ef hitinn væri ögn hærri, í samræmi við birtuna. En miðað við ástandið víða á hnettinum megum við vel við una í svalanum. Og náttúran hefur sinn gang þrátt fyrir hretin. Vorið kom með nýfæddu ungviði og jurtir vöknuðu til lífs og springa nú út og blómstra hver á eftir annarri í sinni réttu röð. Það er enn vor, langt vor!

Hér fyrir ofan og neðar eru nokkrar vormyndir: efst hófsóley (Caltha palustris); neðar: hrafnaklukka (Cardamine pratensis); tjaldsegg; sjálfa með ástleitnu folaldi (Viljahestar) og loðvíðigrein (Salix lanata) teygir sig upp úr sinunni.

Friday photo: Nothing affects our lives more than our planet’s position in the solar system. Yesterday was the summer solstice (due to a leap year, on June 20, otherwise on June 21) and daylight in Iceland is at its peak. There is no darkness: today the sun rose in Reykjavík shortly before 3 am in the morning and it does not set until after midnight. It’s easy to imagine that life would be somewhat sweeter if the temperature was a bit higher, in line with the brightness. But considering the situation in many parts of the world, we are better off with the fresher and cooler temperatures. And nature has its way despite times with setbacks bad weather. Spring comes with newborn foals and lambs, the flora awakens and flowers bloom one after the other in their proper order. It is still spring, the long spring …

Above and below are few photos from this spring. Vinir tveir | Two friends

Litla skrímslið og stóra skrímslið var frumsýnt í Hofi hjá Leikfélagi Akureyrar þann 13. janúar síðastliðinn. Það var gaman að taka þátt í gleðinni í Hofi og fagna með þessum listagóða sýningarhópi sem Jenný Lára Anórsdóttir stýrði af mikilli fagmennsku. Sýningar verða þéttar næstu helgar, til 11. febrúar. Miðasalan er á vef Menningarfélags Akureyrar, mak.is.

Little Monster and Big Monster had premiere at Akureyri Theater, in the Black Box at Hof Culture Center, on January 13th. It was great fun to be in the audience and to celebrate a very good work of gifted group of artists, directed by Jenný Lára Arnórsdóttir. Shows will run all next weekends, ending on february 11th. Tickets at mak.is.

Umfjöllun – til minnis: | Book review

Bókadómur: Ég rakst nýverið á umfjöllun um „til minnis:“ á þeim ágæta bókmenntavef: Skáld.is, en þar skrifa konur um konur sem skrifa. Ritdómurinn hafði farið fram hjá mér þegar hann birtist síðasta haust. Magnea Þuríður Ingvarsdóttir skrifar grein sem ber titilinn: Er náttúran mín eða þín? Hún heldur í ferðalag inn í ljóðin og segist þar finna: „Endalaust fagrar hendingar og litlar myndir af náttúrunni“. Umfjöllunina má finna hér á skald.is.

Book Review: I recently came across a review of my book of poetry: til minnis: on the excellent literature website: Skáld.is, where women write about women who write. I had missed the review when it was published last fall. Magnea Þuríður Ingvarsdóttir writes an article entitled: Is the nature mine or yours? She describes how the reader goes on a journey into the poetry and says she finds there: “Endless beautiful lines and images of nature”. The review can be found here at skald.is.

Norðurland | The winter land

Á ferð: Í janúar átti ég vikudvöl Davíðshúsi á Akureyri og gat notið þess að fylgjast með lokaæfingum á Litla skrímslinu og stóra skrímslinu, sem var frumsýnt hjá Leikfélagi Akureyrar í mánuðinum. Auk þess nýtti ég gott næði í húsinu til vinnu. Auðvitað var kjörið að sjá myndlistarsýningar á listasafninu góða, fara í skógarböð og fleira gott. Norðurlandið var heillandi eins og ævinlega: hreint ævintýri að vera á ferð um vetrarlandið í ljósaskiptunum. Skagafjörðurinn og Hérðasvötnin voru töfrandi í algjöru logni og vetrardýrð.

On the road: In January, I spent a week at Davíðshús in Akureyri up in the North, and was able to enjoy watching the final rehearsals of my play Little Monster and Big Monster, which premiered at Akureyri Theater on the 13th. In addition, I got some writing and planning done too. And of course, it was nice to see art exhibitions at the art museum, go visit the “forest lagoon” and other good things of leisure. The north of Iceland was charming as always, and a pure adventure to be traveling through the winter wonderland in the twilight. Skagafjörður and Hérðasvötn rivers were magical in calm weather and winter glory.

Skrímsli í leikhúsinu! Það hefur verið hreint dásamlegt að fylgjast með skrímslunum holdgerast í hæfileikaríkum leikurum hjá Leikfélagi Akureyrar síðustu daga, en LA hefur tekið til sýninga leikritið um svörtu skrímslin tvö. Frumsýning er næstkomandi laugardag, 13. janúar, í Svarta kassanum í Hofi og þá verður sko dúndurgaman! Miðasalan er á vef Menningarfélags Akureyrar, mak.is.

Monster theater! It has been an absolut pleasure to watch rehearsals at Akureyri Theater this week and to see the two monsters come alive in the two talented actors: Margrét Sverrisdóttir as Little Monster and Hjalti Rúnar Jónsson as Big Monster. This is a new production of my play “Little Monster and Big Monster in the Theater” by Akureyri Theatre Company (LA – Leikfélag Akureyrar).

Costumes are designed by Björg Marta Gunnarsdóttir and make-up artist is Harpa Birgisdóttir. Director is Jenný Lára Arnórsdóttir and the catchy music is composed by Þorvaldur Bjarni Þorvaldsson. Sound and lighting designers are Árni F. Sigurðsson and Benni Sveinsson. Stage manager is Unnur Anna Árnadóttir.

The premiere is next Saturday, January 13th, in the Black Box at Hof Culture Center in Akureyri and I am surely looking forward to it! Tickets at mak.is.

Af stað inn í nýja árið! | A walk into the new year

Áramót: Ég hef notið þess að eiga nokkra góða daga í sveitinni í kringum áramótin. Eftir veisluhöld og mannfagnaði er fátt betra en að rölta út í bláinn og horfa á fjöllin og skýin, sjólagið og stöku fugla í vetrarlandslaginu. Nú hækkar sól á lofti!
⬆︎ 2023: Snæfellsjökull sveif í hillingum og hrafninn hafði sitt að segja á síðasta degi ársins.
⬇︎2024: En nýja árið lofaði góðu: Ölver var klæddur í bleikar slæður og teiknin í fjörunni voru margvísleg.

The turn of the year: I have been enjoying a few days at the farm around the new year. One of the best ways to recover after the Christmas feasts is to stroll out in to the cold blue and watch the sky and the mountains, as well as the sea and the few birds that stay for winter. And the sun is returning back, minute by minute!
⬆︎ 2023: Snæfell Glacier (Snæfellsjökull) flew above the sea in superior mirage, but the raven had the last word on the last day of the year.
⬇︎2024: The new year is promising: Mt. Ölver (the Pyramid of Iceland) was dressed in pink veils and the signs I found at the beach were delightfully mysterious.

Viðtal og bókadómur | An interview and a book review

Eftir flóðið! Að venju höfum við höfundar beðið spenntir í desember í von um að fá bókadóma og viðbrögð frá lesendum við afurðum ársins. Ég ætla ekki að kvarta yfir viðtökunum sem „Allt annar handleggur“ hefur fengið, þau hafa sannarlega verið vonum framar. En mikið væri gaman ef bókaumfjöllun í fjölmiðlunum væri meiri og þéttari, árið um kring! Ég skil vel að vinnuþjakaðir blaðamenn nái ekki að vinna sig niður jólabókastaflann á einum mánuði eða svo, en mætti ekki koma með fleiri bókadóma næstu mánuði? Varla gengur menningarumfjöllun út á jólagjafasölu eintóma? 

Pennarnir á Lestrarklefanum hafa staðið sig vel og Rebekka Sif fjallaði þar um Allt annan handlegg eins og lesa má í greininni sem ber yfirskriftina Óhapp verður að velheppnaðri bók. Í ritdómi sínum segir Rebekka m.a.:

„Bókin er einstaklega skapandi gjörningur úr smiðju Áslaugar sem varð fyrir því óhappi að handleggsbrjóta sig. …Limrurnar eru flestar skondnar og munu vekja upp kátínu lesenda. … Að mínu mati er Allt annar handleggur bók fyrir allan aldur þrátt fyrir að hún sé skráð sem barnabók í Bókatíðindum. Ég sé hana fyrir mér sem skemmtilega tækifærisgjöf ef létta þarf lund fullorðins fólks en börnin verða nú auðvitað hrifin af henni, og þá sérstaklega ljósmyndunum og fígúrunum sem Áslaug hefur skapað svo skemmtilega.“

After the Christmas Book Flood: My new book, Allt annar handleggur (On the Other Hand), a collection of hand puppetry photos and limericks, has been well received by readers of all ages. As usual in December, we authors wait anxiously for book reviews and reactions from readers to the products of the past months. I can not complain about the reception my new book has received, it has certainly exceeded my expectations! On the literary webzine Lestrarklefinn (The Reading Room) Rebekka Sif wrote about Allt annar handleggur in an article entitled Óhapp verður að velheppnaðri bók (Accident Becomes a Successful Book). In her review, Rebekka says, among other things:

“The book is an extremely creative work of art from Áslaug´s workshop, who had the misfortune of breaking her arm. … The limericks are funny and will make the readers laugh. … In my opinion, ‘Allt annar handleggur’ is a book for all ages, although it is listed as a children’s book. I see it as a fun gift if someone’s mood needs to be lightened, but the children will of course like it, and especially the photographs and figures that Áslaug has created so amusingly.

Nóvember | The last leaves

Föstudagsmyndin: Nú standa flest lauftré nakin, en nóvember var einstaklega mildur. Myndirnar eru úr Öskjuhlíðinni, en það er ljúft að flýja jólaös og laumast þar um í góðu veðri. Gleðilega fullveldishátíð og jólaföstu framundan!

Friday photo: November was nice – I have at least forgotten all about the bad weather. A stroll in Öskjuhlíð park is wonderful this time of year. Facing south with trees and bushes of all sorts, this park is always a little less cold than the more open areas closer to the sea.
Also: Today, December 1st, we celebrate Iceland’s Sovereignty day, even had a bit of sunshine! Happy December!

Allt annar handleggur | On the Other Hand

Ný bók! Sjálfshjálpar- og gleðibókin „Allt annar handleggur“ er komin út! Í bókinni haldast í hendur ljósmyndir og limrur og þar kynnast lesendur allra handa kvikindum. Bókin er ætluð börnum og fullorðnum á öllum aldri. Útgefandi er hið listagóða forlag Dimma. 

Tilurð bókarinnar má rekja til handleggsbrots, sem varð kveikja að föndri með fatla og umbúðir, og um leið flótta frá ónotum og ama til að létta skap handlama listamanns. Dag hvern var höndin dubbuð upp sem ýmsar fígúrur. Skilyrðið var að nota það sem hendi var næst, ekkert mátti kaupa nýtt og allt varð að skapa á örstuttum tíma. Úr uppátækinu varð til myndasyrpa með 34 mismunandi persónum og kynjaverum þar sem leikmunir voru sóttir í ýmsar ruslakistur: dótakassa, eldhússkúffur og fataskápa. Fígúrurnar voru myndaðar í snatri og leiknum lauk. Síðar bættust við limrur sem túlka hverja persónu, en það kveðskaparform hæfði efninu prýðilega.

Bókin getur vonandi líka veitt innblástur til leikja. Það er gamalgróin list að leika við hvern sinn fingur: allt frá einföldum fingra- og klappleikjum til flóknari brúðuleikja. Gleymum aldrei leiknum, sama hvað á dynur!

Book release! My new book of limericks and “express” hand puppets is out! The title:“Allt annar handleggur” could be translated to “On the Other Hand”. In the book, photographs and limericks hold hands, and the reader meets all sort of handsome creatures! The book is intended for both children and adults – a book for the whole family. It is published by the small but excellent publishing house Dimma. 

A broken arm sparked off a daily play and creations with the cast and bandages, – an escape from a futile and painful period, and a way to lighten the mood of a disabled artist. Each day the useless hand was dressed up and decorated to depict various characters. The condition was to use what was closest to hand, nothing could be bought new and everything had to be created in a very short time. This game resulted in a photo series with 34 different characters and creatures, where props were collected from various boxes and bins: toy boxes, kitchen drawers and wardrobes. The figures were formed as fast as possible, snapped in a photo and the game was over. Later, limericks were added to interpret each character, the form of verse I felt fitted the idea best.

I also hope the book can be an inspiration for games and play. Hand- and finger games are an age-old art: from simple finger and clapping games to more complex plays of puppetry. Never forget to play, no matter what!

Skrímslapest í Japan | Monster Flu in Japan

Skrímslafréttir! Myndabókin Skrímslapest kemur út í Japan í dag, 2. nóvember 2023, hjá forlaginu Yugi Shobou í Tokyo. Þýðandi er Shohei Akakura en þetta er þriðja bókin um skrímslin sem hann þýðir. Titillinn á japönsku er: かいぶつかぜ.

Monsternews! New title in Japanese! Skrímslapest (Monster Flu) will be released today, November 2nd 2023, by the Tokyo based publishers, Yugi Shobou. The book is is translated by Shohei Akakura with the title: かいぶつかぜ. 

Yugi Shobou has previously published two titles from the Monster series in 2022: Skrímsli í myrkrinu (Monsters in the Dark) , まっくらやみのかいぶつ, and Stór skrímsli gráta ekki (Big Monsters Don’t Cry) おおきいかいぶつは なかないぞ！

Fyrstu dagar vetrar | First days of winter

Hrím og norðurljós. Eins og heimurinn veltist um þessar mundir þá eru veðurfréttir bestu fréttirnar: heiður himinn, glampandi sól og logn! Hemaðir pollar og hrím í skugga. Ekki annað hægt en að fagna himni og jörð. Gormánuður hófst með fyrsta vetrardegi laugardaginn 28. október, fullu tungli og norðurljósum. Svo var stórstreymt í gær, 30. október með ómótstæðilegri fjöru. Dásemdardagar!

Frost and northern lights. The way the world is turning at the moment, the weather report brings the best news: clear skies, bright sun and calm weather! Frozen puddles and rime in the shade. Impossible not to praise heaven and earth. The Month of Gor – (Slaughter Month) – began with the First Day of Winter on Saturday, October 28, bringing a full moon and the northern lights. Yesterday, October 30, it was spring tide, making a beach walk irresistible at low tide. Truly days of wonder!

Skýin í júlí | Summer clouds

Föstudagsmyndir: Ég hef notið þess að vera lítið á vefmiðlum í sumar. Myndavélin var þó oft með í för og í júlí voru það skýjaborgirnar sem heilluðu. Veðurfræðingar sögðu júlí þurran og sólríkan suðvestanlands en skýjafarið var oft magnað.

Öll skrímslin í Danmörku! | New releases in Denmark

Nýjar útgáfur í Danmörku: Fjórar bækur úr bókaflokknum um skrímslin komu út í byrjun júní. Útgefendur okkar í Danmörku, Vild Maskine, gáfu út nýja þýðingu af fyrstu bókinni, Nei! sagði litla skrímslið, endurútgáfu Skrímsli í myrkrinu, auk þess að gefa út í fyrsta sinn á dönsku bækurnar Skrímsli í vanda og Skrímslaleik. Hér hefur útgefandinn orðið: 

„Hep! Så er der fire nye bøger i den populære serie om Store Monster og lille monster. To helt nye, ‘Teatermonster’ og ‘Monstre i knibe’, samt to genudgivelser: ‘NEJ! siger lille monster’ og ‘Monstre i mørket’. Nú er sem sagt allur bókaflokkurinn kominn út á dönsku! Í fyrra voru það Skrímsli á toppnum og Skrímslakisi sem komu út á dönsku í fyrsta sinn, en bækurnar Skrímslapest og Stór skrímsli gráta ekki voru endurútgefnar. Skrímsli í heimsókn og Skrímslaerjur komu út hjá fyrri útgefenda, Torgard, og eru enn á markaði. 

New releases: In Denmark, four books from the book series about the black and furry monsters were published in June. Our new publishing house in Denmark, Vild Maskine (e: Wild Machine), released a new translation of the first book in the series, No! Said Little Monster, and a new print of Monsters in the Dark, as well as publishing for the first time in Danish the books Monsters in Trouble and Monster Act. (See titles in Danish in image at top).

Now the entire book series is out in Danish! Last year it was Monster at the Top and Monster Kitty that were published in Danish for the first time, but the books Monster Flu and Big Monsters Don’t Cry were republished. Monster Visit and Monster Squabbles, published by our previous publishers, Torgard, and are still on the market.

The series has received good reviews in Denmark and we hope the new titles find their way to more happy readers!

Fuglasögur | Bird stories

Föstudagsmyndir: Maí og júní – þetta eru mánuðirnir sem fuglalífið er hvað áhugaverðast á Íslandi. Farfuglar fljúga að víðsvegar úr heiminum, fuglasöngur og hreiðurgerð tekur við og ungar klekjast úr eggjum. Nema þegar illa fer. Maí var ekki beinlínis þokkalegur á suðvesturhorninu – það var svalt, vinda- og rigningasamt. Síðla í maí skall á vestanóveður sem stóð lengi og þá máttu lundar og ýmsir sjófuglar sín lítils á hafi úti. Lundum og fleiri svartfuglum skolaði dauðum á land í hundraða tali. Það var sorglegt að ganga fjörur vikurnar eftir illviðrið. Tíðari og öfgafyllri veður eru náttúrunni ekki til framdráttar.

Friday Photos: May and June – these are the months when the bird life in Iceland is most interesting. Migratory birds fly in from all over the world, birdsong and nest building take over and chicks hatch from eggs. Except when things go wrong. The month of May was not exactly pleasant in the south west of Iceland – it was cold, windy and rainy. At the end of May, there was a westerly storm that lasted for a long time, making survival for puffins and various seabirds very tough. Dead puffins and other blackbirds washed ashore by the hundreds. It was extremely sad to walk the beaches the weeks after the storm. More frequent and extreme weather patterns are making life bleak for many species. 

En gleðilegra var að rekast á brandendur í hlaðvarpanum einn morguninn og ekki var síður gaman að fá heimsókn af æðarkollu og blika undir húsvegg eitt kvöldið. Nokkrum dögum síðar rakst ég á hreiður kollunnar undir fjárhúsvegg. Þar taldi hún sig eiga skjól fyrir varginum, sem var búinn að ræna bæði æðar- og gæsahreiður nær sjónum. Við munum gera okkar besta til að styggja ekki þennan góða gest og vonum að ungarnir nái að klekjast út. 

A more happier encounter was finding the common shelducks resting close to our farmhouse. And an eider duck visited our house one evening, followed by her mate. Few days later I found her nest with four eggs by our old barn. There she hopes she is safe from the greedy seagulls, ravens and the eagle that have already pillaged nests of eiders and geese close by. We will do our best to not to disturb our good guest, only three more weeks to go!

Bókadómur: Í byrjun júnímánaðar birtist í Morgunblaðinu prýðilegasti bókadómur eftir Einar Fal Ingólfsson um ljóðabókina til minnis:. Í fjölmiðlaeklunni er gleðiefni að fá góða umfjöllun og jákvæða umsögn! 

Book Review: At the beginning of June, the Morgunblaðið newspaper published a splendid book review about my book of poetry: til minnis: (The title could be translated as “memo:”or “to do:”or perhaps “don’t forget:”).The review was written by Einar Falur Ingólfsson, an acclaimed photographer and artist, and who did not seem to mind that I had slipped some black-and-white photos into the book. Einar Falur says: “One of the main characteristics of the poems is the purposeful use of imagery and not least personification, which often works out beautifully and purposefully.”

Forlagið Yugi Shobou í Tokyo gaf út á síðast ári tvo titla úr bókflokknum um skrímslin: Skrímsli í myrkrinu, まっくらやみのかいぶつ, og Stór skrímsli gráta ekki, おおきいかいぶつは なかないぞ.  Nú er þess að vænta að þriðja bókin í japanskri þýðingu, Skrímslapest, komi út á árinu 2023. Bækurnar eru um þessar mundir kynntar á sérstökum Íslandsdögum sem haldnir eru í einni af stóru úthverfaborgum Tokyo, Tama borg. Á dagskrá kennir ýmissa grasa, þar er bæði lamb og skyr, en sérstök bókamessa er haldin dagana 10. til 18. júní, í Maruzen, Cocoria Tama Center. The books are currently being presented at special ‘Iceland Days’ held in one of Tokyo’s large suburbs, Tama City. The program involves Icelandic culture, food and nature, but at one time there is a special book fair from June 10 to 18, at Maruzen, Cocoria Tama Center. Yugi Shobou will be presenting the Monster series with pictures and information in the library in the Parthenon Tama Library Lounge, from June 7th to June 26th.

Tama City was the host town of Iceland at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Tama City signed a memorandum of understanding on friendship and cooperation with the Embassy of Iceland in Japan, and in honor of Iceland’s Independence Day on June 17th, an event will be held where you can experience Iceland.

Orð um bók | On the radio

Orð um bækur: Í vikulegum bókmenntaþætti er útvarpskonan Jórunn Sigurðardóttir óþreytandi í að kynna margvíslegar bókmennir, með viðtölum við höfunda, upplestri og umfjöllun. Í síðasta þætti, sunnudag 30. apríl, fjallaði Jórunn meðal annars um ljóðbókina til minnis: og fékk mig til að lesa nokkur ljóð. Þættir Jórunnar, Orð um bækur, eru á RÚV, Rás 1 og þá má nálgast hér. Þá er einnig að finna á helstu hlaðvarpsveitum.

Uppfært 6. maí: grein á heimasíðu RÚV, Lífið er alls staðar í kring, byggt á viðtalinu í þætti Jórunnar.

Í dag, fyrsta maí, er alþjóðlegur baráttudagur verkalýðsins og ég óska öllum heilla í baráttunni.

Words on books: In her weekly literary program, radio host Jórunn Sigurðardóttir is tireless in introducing and casting light on a variety of literature, with interviews, readings and reviews. Last episode, Sunday, April 30, included a piece on my new poetry book, til minnis:, and I read a few poems. The radio program “Orð um bækur” (Words on Books), is on the Icelandic Public Radio, RÚV, Channel 1 and can be accessed here. The radio program can also be found on all main podcast apps.

Dagur jarðar: Í dag er Dagur jarðar, dagur umhverfis og náttúruverndar. Sólríkur sumardagurinn fyrsti nýliðinn og full ástæða til að fagna vorinu, lífinu í sverðinum, farfuglunum og öllu þar á milli. Gleðilegt sumar!

Earth Day: Today is Earth Day. Last Thursday was the First Day of Summer in Iceland, the first day of the summer month Harpa, according to the Old Norse calendar – a national holiday and an absolute favorite day for every Icelander. All in all time to celebrate spring, the awakening vegetation, birdsong and brighter days. Happy sping days!

Skrímsli í vanda í Helsinki | Monsters in Trouble – in Helsinki

Skrímslafréttir! Í dag, 11. apríl 2023, opnaði sýning með myndum úr Skrímsli í vanda í norræna bókasafninu í Helsinki, Nordisk kulturkontakt, Kajsaniemigatan 9. Í tengslum við sýninguna verða upplestrar og skapandi vinnustofur fyrir börn á leikskólaaldri, unnar í samstarfi við nemendur í kennslufræðum við háskólann í Helsinki.

Áhugasamir geta haft samband við Mikaelu Wickström, sem hefur veg og vanda af verkefninu, en vinnustofurnar eru í boði daglega frá kl. 9.30-10.15. Sýningin stendur til 9. maí.

Hjá Norræna bókagleypirnum má einnig finna margvísleg verkefni og umfjöllun um Skrímsli í vanda á öllum norðurlandamálunum.

Monsternews! Today, 11 April 2023, an exhibition featuring illustrations from Monsters in Trouble opened at the Nordic Library in Helsinki: Nordisk kulturkontakt, Kajsaniemigatan 9. In conjunction with the exhibition, readings and creative workshops for preschool children will be conducted in collaboration with students in pedagogy at the University of Helsinki.

All interested can contact Mikaela Wickström for further information. The workshops run daily from 9.30-10.15. The exhibition runs until May 9.

Also available at the children’s book site the “Nordic Book Devourer” are projects for children, study and support material on Monsters in Trouble, available in all the Nordic and Scandinavian languages.

Til minnis: ljóðabók! | Poetry book release!

LJÓÐ: Ljóðabókin „til minnis“ var að koma úr prentun og því skal fagnað! Kverið hefur verið lengi í pípunum en ljóðin eru þó flest frá síðustu tíu árum eða svo. Bókin skiptist í tvo kafla, 30 ljóð í hvorum kafla og nokkrar svart-hvítar ljósmyndir fylgja. Útgefandi er Mál og menning. 

Ljóðin í kaflanum útfiri tengjast náttúru og landi en í kaflanum næði er farið um borgina. Ljóðin eiga uppruna sinn í einskonar ljóðadagbók og fjalla því um hversdaglegar augnabliksmyndir úr náttúru og borg, litaðar af mismunandi árstíðum, veðrum og vindum. Ljósmyndirnar eru af sama meiði og ljóðin: mig langar að lesandinn staldri við svo ég megi spyrja: sérðu það sem ég sé?

POETRY: My new book of poems “til minnis:” is just out and it’s time to celebrate! The title could be translated as “memo:” or “to do:”or perhaps “don’t forget:”. The book has been in the pipeline for quite some time, but most of the poems are from the last ten years or so. Published by Forlagið – Mál og menning. 

The book is divided into two chapters, 30 poems in each chapter, followed by several black-and-white photos. The first half relates to nature and land, while in the second chapter is dedicated to the city. The poems originate from a poetry-diary of sorts, so they deal with everyday scenes in nature and city, always colored by the seasons, weathers and winds. The photographs are of the same nature as the poems: I would like the reader to pause so that I may ask: do you see what I see?

Bókverk á RABF | Reykjavík Art Book Fair 2023

BÓKVERK: Bókverkamessan í Reykjavík, RABF – Reykjavík Art Book Fair, verður haldin dagana 30. mars til 2. apríl í Listasafni Reykjavíkur í Hafnarhúsinu. Við ARKIR verðum þar og kynnum verk okkar. Meðal annars verðum við með nýja sameiginlega bókverka-möppu, í 20 árituðum eintökum. Allt ólík verk sem þó tengjast að innihaldi. Þar verður heftið mitt „höpp (af handahófi)“ meðal verka, en fjögurra laufa smárar spila þar rullu.

BOOK ART: RABF – Reykjavík Art Book Fair will be held at Reykjavík Art Museum Hafnarhús from March 30 to April 2. My art group ARKIR will be exhibiting and selling works at the fair, amongst them a new collective work: a folder of small books and booklets, in 20 signed copies. The works vary in content and medium, but are connected by a theme. My piece in the collection is the booklet „höpp (af handahófi) – my random luck“, a collection of photos of my findings of four (and five!) leaf clovers, documented in photos and dried items.
